I'm planning on trying to work on my Tempest cap kit tonight, the one for the HV cage. I'm not going to be able to start until 8:30 or 9PM when the kids go down for the night, so I'm wondering if people think I could pull it off in a few hours? I've already done the flyback, and I'm dying to play my Tempest again.

i would think you can. if it's your first cap kit, it'll take you longer, but i still would think you'd be able to get it done in 1-2 hours, although if you do the full bob roberts kit there are more parts than on a regular raster monitor.

It should not take more than 10 minutes, including time spent waiting for your iron to heat up. There really isn't much to 6100 cap kits.

The full Roberts Deluxe cap/repair kit for the 6100 usually takes me about 2 hours...which includes replacing all of the deflection transistors, the caps, the main diodes, and some resistors and transistors. I use the Hakko 808 de-soldering gun which I like to think speeds up the removal of soldered parts.

But I'm sure there are others that are faster than I regardless :) ...

You should be able to do that in less than an hour, if it's just the High Voltage cage.

I think it takes me about 20 minutes to do a 4900 cap kit now, but that's about the easiest one to do.

For me 20-30 mins, but I've done so many of them by now I just go through and pull all the caps off first, then start stuffing the holes with the new ones. Flip Solder, clip.

I don't recommend that on your first one though. Do one cap at a time, noting polarity.

Even at a slow pace you can finish in a couple hours.

Thanks all. Hopefully I can make this happen tonite. My biggest fear is actually the bottle cap resistors. Every time I read abt remembering the insulators, making sure they aren't grounded out, needing thermal grease etc I get all squirrely.

I can do most in 10-15 minutes.

The diodes that come in the deluxe kit aren't to replace the main input bridge -- they're FAR roo small...

Tempest took me a lot longer...I am a very slow tech. The thermal grease on the frame mounted transistors got everywhere. I still need to take each one apart to do more cleaning with alcohol and q-tips. Take your time, don't rush, you could make a bad mistake. My 2c

Good luck with it.

That sounds so familiar. I have to wait until the kids are asleep to do my work on my cab too, especially because my 20 month old likes Daddy and really likes to mess with what Daddy is doing.

Seriously!! +1

Those diodes that come with the kit are 1N4007's or 4004's which are 1 Amp diodes. The ones that are on the board are 5 Amp diodes (or is it 3?).

DONT use the diodes in Bob's kit in the bridge rectifier section of a 6100!!

Matt

Err..Bob wrote up a large post about the diodes on his page. The ones I got in my kit are much physically larger than the ones that came out. I had no problem using them; I got the extra parts kit. I just did my Tempest a few weeks ago, maybe everyone else got an older kit??? The ones in his kit are beefy 5Amp diodes. Heck, my kit came with 5Amp and 6Amp diodes! See the write up here:

Per the glop, what was there from the factory was more than enough...so much that it got all over the transistors, the holders, my hands, the desk...everywhere!

Write up or not a 1 amp diode is no substitute for a 5 amp diode.

I wouldnt even bother replacing them unless they are bad. The diodes on the board dont get stressed out enough unless something takes them out.

Matt

He gives you the 5Amp or better diodes to replace the 2Amps originally installed by Wells Gardner on the 6100s.
