My Spy Hunter had massive sound issues when I first got the machine and I have been slowly bringing it back to life. Now my Peter Gun music plays great and I have all sounds from my main PCB.
To repair the sound I had to rebuild the original linear power supply, replaced all the elect caps in the machine (on all PCBs and power supply) and replace several chips on the cheap squeak deluxe.

Now here is my question - how much static noise (white noise) is there in a properly working Spy Hunter? If I turn both sound level pots down (off) - I still hear some static coming from the speakers. It is not real bad, but noticeable. Is this normal? To be clear - it is not a hum like I also had before, but just some static. I also know it is only present when the cheap squeak is connected.
Thanks!

I do not have any static on mine.

Most of the Spy Hunters I have seen have had a hiss from the speakers. Spy Hunters seem to be real sensitive to the power supply. My Spy Hunter had a noticeable hiss coming from the speakers, and I did a bit of troubleshooting, and finally swapped the power supply with a spare that I had, and the hiss is NEARLY gone. My hiss would disapear if I disconnected the Cheap Squeak PCB (the one that plays the Peter Gunn theme).

a little is normal.
Did you replace the 55k and 100k uF electrolytics in the suitcase power brick in the bottom of the cab?

edit - i think i had a csd that did the same thing, iirc it was the dac that was causing the static.

Thanks for all the suggestions !

I figured out my problem last night. It was the MC3340 (U1 on the cheap squeak) causing all the static. I removed the chip and put a socket in its place and put the chip back. I still had static. I removed the chip and all static was gone and so was the audio because I broke the chain. I did this to prove to myself that I did not have a ground issue in the cab - thinking if it is a ground or power supply problem the static would remain. I pulled the chip and then jumpered pin 1 to 7 with a 1K resistor. All the static was COMPLETELY gone and the audio was crystal clear. The MC4430 is a electronic attenuator. The pot in the coin door controls pin 2 of this device to control the volume. From what I read this part is obsolete - so it may be hard to find. Does anyone out there have a spare MC3340 lying around??? I can wire up the cab without this device, but I will be unable to control the volume of the Peter Gunn music.
