Calling all NBA Jam fans

How cool!

Teach the young whippersnappers some classic video game goodness!

Edit: Yeah, I know -- it's not 'classic' in the 'classic' sense. But it's still a great game. :)

Yeah it's definitey not a classic in the sense that I use the word classic. But I think to some of the slighty younger crowd who were too young to play games in the arcade in the eary 80s (like Jow), the game is a classic. Maybe we could call these 90s classics or something.

That is one of the few more recent games that I really got into back in the day and I grew up on the mid-late 70's - mid 80's games.

I used to go to lunch with a bunch of work buddies and then we'd hit either a downtown arcade for 4-5 games of NBA Jam or (when that arcade eventually folded) a restaurant that had an NBA Jam game.

The game play was terrific and the rivalry was stupendous and we kept this up for probably 2-3 years! :)

BTW, haven't seen much of you lately. Have you been okay?

Been fine. Just been off work and playing a lot of console games so haven't been on much. Today was my first day back to work in almost a month and I think I probably posted two or three times as much today as I did the last few weeks combined.

sweet a remake, I hope is doesnt suck as well.

NBA Jambs is an awesome game. Rivalry between friends is what made this game. also was a huge game for me growing up

I agree - to a point. Exactly when does a game become a "classic"? Back when NBA Jam first came out, the games you speak of were already hailed as "classics." About as much time has passed, if not more, since NBA Jam was released, so when can it achieve such status?

I would argue that there should be some way to distinguish the two types of classics, but I would argue that a game such as NBA Jam is a classic in its own right.

I suppose calling it a "90s Classic" would be good enough for me.

I consider classics as games that were the first of there kind. and forgive me if im wrong but when nba jam came out there wasnt anything like it.

Awesome.. I can't wait. I will be getting this game. NBA JAM = best NBA game ever!! Off topic question - Is the Wii game with the classic arcade games out yet? The one that had Burgetime, Bad Dudes, etc.?

Cool I might pick it up, seems like the Wii is getting a lot of remakes on the VC and such.

One of these days I will own a dedicated cab, just don't have the room right now.

Can Nintendo not eff this up, and have online play? I am really hoping so. Looking forward to screen shots/rosters/etc.

Freaking awesome.

I'm so pumped for this! First arcade machine I bought was NBA JAM!!!

Not sure if the article mentioned it because its blocked for me at work but EA has hired Mark Turmell ,creator of the original NBA JAM, to help with this project. Lets hope they keep it close to the original as possible but with new players and online play.I also hope that they have some cool secret characters.Maybe they could do Obama as one like they did with Clinton back in the day. They should have a create a player option like on Maximum Hangtime too. Theres so much they could do with this game. I've been wondering why someone hasn't done it sooner.

Only thing that sucks bad about this is they only show it coming out on the Wii. Hopefully that will change. This should be a mulitplatform downloadable game with online play.

NBA JAM PS3 WITH ONLINE FTW !!!!!!!!!!!

Wow -- interesting site and comments.

I worked as a professional programmer/team lead/dev manager for about 13-14 years and actually had an interview with Mindscape as a game developer in Chicago right out of school. (They instituted a hiring freeze a few days before my interview so it never happened).

I really did want to work in the game industry right out of school but in retrospect it's probably best that it never happened because it's a crazy, topsy-turvy kind of job with no security whatsoever.

Check out this description of Midway's work environment and it's not hard to see why it folded. No business that shoddily managed can survive for long, particularly not in a bad economic climate.

I didn't have any issues with EA management while I was there, beyond them laying off everyone at my location (me included) two months after I started. They took better care of their employees and actually managed to ship things that sold enough to profit -- there are reasons EA is big and still around. The code base (libraries that handled 3D, networking, i/o, stuff like that) was extensive and very well-documented, in contrast with Midway which didn't have much of anything. There was a lot of resistance among the old-time (and therefore influential) employees at Midway toward newfangled programming languages like "C." No kidding.

I was at Origin in Austin. Redwood Shores might treat people differently but my boss, at least, didn't believe in working insane mega-hours except for brief periods before milestones and gold master. We were at work by 9 and only seldom left much after 6. At Midway, we were told halfway through the project to work every weekend and late every night. They wanted 70-hour weeks to be the normal state of affairs. Nobody worked that much, but the producer didn't know because he was never around. Midway was the first time I ran into people who were paid more than half a million a year to do nothing visible.

I can't speak for all of EA but what I saw was a lot more professional and focused than anything at Midway.
