Cabinet Paint

Chad,

How do you plan to apply it? I've had best luck, so far, spraying from a cheap HVLP gun and a good sized compressor. I've sprayed oil based, thinned with 20% acetone and it came out awesome. I've also used latex based, and while the results were great and cleanup is easier, it seemed harder to get as good of a finish.

One day I hope to get a nice sized compressor so I can spray but until then...
I use the exact same paint/thinner as joeycuda however I use a foam roller for application.

The only problem with using acetone and a foam roller is the acetone evaporates quick and sometimes the paint will begin to thicken up in the tray if you take too long applying it. If this is the case just hit the tray with a bit of acetone.

I've tried almost every thinner imaginable. Acetone is the only one that seems to work for me. Most if not all of the other thinners I've used f-up the finish in one way or another. Then again it could be me... but acetone works perfectly for me every time.

For paint I use good old quart sized rustoleum satin. I also have had luck with enamel from Sherwin Williams but that stuff is getting harder and harder to get these days with the new environmental laws here in Maryland... soon it will be no more.

The easiest to get quart sized oil based right now - the Rustoleum line at Lowe's, and HD may stock it. Thing some might not like, all the 'colors' are gloss. Black and white come in satin and semi. I used the Regal Red on my Stargate and it was a perfect match. Probably won't be that lucky with most colors.

Rustoleum oil based satin black is my paint of choice and the best smooth foam roller you can buy. The only downside is that oil based takes forever to dry

I have discovered an upside to that though.. If you use a water based latex paint for a stencil layer, there can be a problem. It dries fast enough that when you go to pull up the stencil, it tears on the edges sometimes. Wait 15 minutes after spraying the last coat of an oil based finish, pull up the stencil material, and you won't have that issue.

I mostly don't like the increased drying time for something like a hinge or a coin door that will come in contact with another painted surface. Gotta give it a week or so to fully dry/harden.
