BYOAC/arcadecontrols.com server is dead and being replaced

Mods, if this is not appropriate please forgive and delete, but many of the BYOAC members are also members here.

The BYOAC server is dead. We're giving up on it.

I've just bought a new server. Waiting for it to be setup. I have access to the drives from the old server and am doing a final data backup off of it. Then we'll bring the new box online, configure it, and bring the forums and site back up.

It's going to probably be days before we're back online.

The server had a good, fulfilling life handling the BYOAC site.

Glad you can just up and pay for a whole new server. Though I guess us arcade people have a bit more...disposable income than normal folks (at least we like to think so. ;) )

Good luck Saint, you have a great forum and community, hopefully you'll be up and running again in no time.

Well... It had a damn good run. The server is dead, long live the new server :D

Here's hoping for a smooth recovery.

On a semi-related note (and I realise you've already purchased hardware, so I'm just throwing this out there as a general statement): I'm going to heartily endorse 3-year leases on physical hardware. For situations where sticking everything out in the cloud just won't cut it, knowing that 36 months after you put it in service the device is going to be replaced with newer, shinier, and (hopefully) more reliable rocks. So does being able to roll support contracts, licensing, and hardware costs into a monthly payment. Just something for anyone in a similar situation to consider.

This is totally where my head went reading about the server dying. Yep...got it bad.

Best luck getting back up and running. My FIFjr. wouldn't be here without BYOAC.

^ master control wont help lol

I knew they were having issues for long time, I guess the old pc finally died... I always use both sites for info. good material on both

Ah, so that's why I couldn't connect! I knew there were problems recently, so I figured it finally gave up. Glad to hear you're on top of it!

Thanks for the kind words everyone :) Buying a new server is actually a misnomer - I pay a monthly fee to a hosting company (1and1.com) for a dedicated server somewhere out in cyberspace. I didn't pay outright for a new server, I just entered into a new contract for a new server. First month I'll be making two payments but then I'll cancel the old server contract and be paying the same rate now for much better hardware (current contract is about 4 years old) and more drive space.

Wait...shouldn't the hosting company then be responsible for hardware maintenance, data migration, and all that stuff? Why would you have to "buy" a new server?

Or are you dissatisfied with the old hosting company, and decided to give another company a try?

Arcadecontrols.com was my goto website when I bought my first cabinet. It's mostly responsible for bringing me into the hobby/business. It started as a hobby and shortly became a business.

I had taken a couple of years off of arcadecontrols because I've been focusing on repairs of dedicated games in the recent past, but this summer I came into an empty crazy taxi cabinet and built a MAME/M2 Multi racer out of it. I will be showing the multi-racer at our local Fall Home Improvement show in a couple of weeks.

ArcadeControls.com was an invaluable resource: http://pinballmd.com/multi-racer-software-buttoned-up/

Some hosting companies only provide floor space for you to collocate your equipment. Not all provide everything.

Or they sell colo space and the hardware to go with it as a bundle. Not as common these days since the vast majority of hosting has by now moved to some form of virtualisation, but it does still happen.
