Hi guys. I'm thinking it's time to buy a new system in the next few weeks. I'm torn between the PS 3 and 3 ds. I did own 3 ds for a short while and liked it but I sold it because the 1st party content was a lot further down the road than I thought plus I was in a bit of a pinch and thought what the hell.

I'm thinking 3 ds for the following reasons: super Mario land 3 ds, Mario kart 7 (and any Mario games to follow as well as games like star fox and ridge racer. The portability is a big plus too. It would be nice to watch movies, surf the web and play games wherever I am.

The ps3 has some games I would really like to try out such as little big planet 1&2 burnout paradise and the ridge racer games.Theres also a nice back catalog with alot of under $20,00 games. The thing that scares me is the red ring issue. I hate to put all that cash into a system and games only to have it crash on me. I talked to the guy at the mom and pop video game sop about how many they see come in for repair and he said they get quite a few every week with the average repair cost around $150.00.

The other factor is cost, I could get the 3ds for 170.00 or the ps3 and a three year warranty for 300.00. I am not doing great financially so I want to make a good choice here. What do you guys think? And what are your experiences with PS 3's crashing? Thanks.

My PS3 has never given me any problems, but neither has my Xbox 360 (I hope I didn't just jinx myself...). As for which to choose, I think you just need to make a pro/con list of each and see which makes more sense in the long run.

The 3DS is cheaper and portable, so that's nice, but you'll have a larger catalog of games if you go with the PS3 (unless you count regular DS games as well, which there are a LOT of).

At this point in time, I don't play either system very much...the 360 gets the most play from me just because my PS3 is primarily an "exclusives only" system, meaning I only buy games likes Uncharted, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid on there. The DS was a great system, but the 3DS is lacking so far. I'm excited about the titles you mentioned and I think it'll pick up once those are released but overall I think the 3DS is a lackluster system.

I don't really think you have much to worry about with a PS3 failing on you though - unless you play it all the time and leave it in a poorly ventilated entertainment center or something.

I don't see a handheld vs. console system decision as one or the other, they are really for two different things.

I probably would get the console instead. I think the days of dedicated handheld systems are probably coming to an end, and everything is moving to all in one phone solutions. I think Nintendo is realizing this.........

I sure hope not, cause I'm sick and f**king tired of cell phones being more than just phones...and they are VERY much not gamer ready, especially touchscreen ones.
People change cell phones like goddamn underwear, and I do NOT want in on that just to play the latest games, it will become akin to PC gaming with hardware upgrades out the ying yang.

My phone...is a phone. If they ditch dedicated handhelds in favor of going to phones, they can kiss my money goodbye.

Thanks guys. After reading through your post i think the ps 3 might be the better choice. I'm gonna do some research as to what games are out there. I think I'll wait untill black friday and see if i can get a better deal.

robotron jon, I hope your wrong about hand helds dieing. I wouldnt want to use a phone to play all of my games or have the games be download only. I would rather have an actual dedicated system with phisical media.

I wouldn't buy either. I've never even used my PS3 for ANYthing besides Blu-rays (it came with my 46" Sony TV... seriously). And 3DS seems pretty unintriguing (a few first party titles aside, but even those would probably disappoint).

But I guess if I had to pick one at gunpoint I'd get the 3DS. Unless we can add anything with a vagina as a 3rd option.

I'd pick the PS3 over the 3DS unless you travel a lot. 3DS = disappointing so far.
