Buy it or I'm gonna part it out.

Probably been covered before, but need a quick rant here...

I keep seeing this tactic used on FS posts and while I don't like the idea of crapping on people's ad, the urge to do so is never higher when people write this (especially when they have over priced their obviously trashed machine and aren't even open to offers).

It's a bushleague move. Anyone else agree?

I'll make an exception for games that are dead or need serious work to be 100%, but I see this on A LOT of working & near working games. It's even worse when the seller puts a time limit on it:

"Buy it by Monday or I'm gonna destroy it."

I know, I know - it's none of my business what somebody does with their machine, but I certainly have the right to say it's dumb.

Ok, rant over :)

Games take up space. Sometimes the seller really needs it out of the way. I know of someone who has offered games at really fair prices and they just sat. At some point, parting it out and destroying the cabinet is all you can do, if no one will buy it complete, after months and months.

Sometimes it's about the disparity in prices for games vs. parts.

Just as a "for instance": if I offered up my Journey cocktail for, say, $800, it might take awhile to get a buyer. There'd be a lot of "eh, I would, but it's the cocktail", etc. If I suddenly had a perfectly-working Journey boardset, tape player controller board, power supply board, original cassette deck, pretty monitor, etc. to offer, BAM! I've got cash either from here, or eBay, or someplace else. And I might even do better than the $800 once it's all sold off.

Some people do it in an attempt to strong-arm, but I think it's also an indication that values placed on complete machines vs. the individual guts are often out of whack.

There are very few games any more that are worth more whole than parted. That's why lots of guys here make money parting out games. Some make a living off it.

In the end it boils down to what's most important to the seller: money, or the love of the game.

I'm with KittyBeater on this one.

We've got a lot of cheap bastards down here. Or lots of love for the games, but not much money.

When you see tested/working boardsets for some games sell for $200, monitor chassis for $75, control panels, harnesses/supplys, etc snatched up but your fully working game sits silently for $200 or so- then what?

Do you guys know how sturdy a Sega Convert-A-Cab is? It's like a brick, except the bottom can flake away if it absorbs some water.

I busted up a Tac Scan one time and it was WORK!
I'm probably going to have to do the same thing to a Star Trek shortly. At least someone will benefit from a working G08 and a working card cage with some sound issues..

Or you only get the bottom feeder $50-$100 offers for the working games that even when accepted the chances of the guy actually following through are slim to none...

I did that once to get someone to buy my games. I had a nice working Star Castle, and an OK mostly working Spy Hunter. I finally threatened to part them, and an out of town guy saw the post and drove over to get them. $300 for both. I definitely wan't trying to get rich off of them, and I probably wouldn't have parted them (that seems like a lot of work), but the threat paid off that time. I met a new arcade friend in the process, so it turned out well.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a cheap non working Missile Command that was threatened to be parted. When I picked it up, he said he wouldn't have actually parted it, but the threat worked for me. I didn't want it, but it was definitely nice enough to not be parted. I passed it on for what I paid for it, so hopefully it will be a working game again before long.

I had a member here PM me out of the blue trying to sell me some parts for one of my machines. I didn't need everything he was wanting to sell, so I made a fair offer on the parts I did want. He came back with, "It's not worth my time, I'll just throw it all away." Dude PMs me and tries to make it sound like I'm the one wasting his time...

Buy it or part it

Amen brother. Have to admit though, I do buy a lot of parts here so I guess I benefit from these deals too. I'd rather restore them than tear them down as we both know. That's what gets me in trouble.....

I hate to see them get parted, but I understand when people do it. Some people don't have the room for them, hell at least the guy's TRYING to sell it.

I never understood why people who insist on parting their machines out simply don't list the parts and move on? Why must so many people add to their posts "I just parted out a XXXXX..." That invites people to criticize. Just list the damn parts people. We don't need to know the history of the cab. Use your heads.

Exactly.

I'll eat the bratwurst. I don't wanna know how it's made.
