picked up a DK3, with throw-in DK boardset, marquee, bezel, and control panel some time ago. the DK3 CP overlay is in good shape, but all the controls are not. it looks like they've been replaced at least once, and are in bad shape now. the DK control panel is structurally good, but the overlay and instruction card are in bad shape, and same story on the controls as the DK3.

so, what is the best source for replacement buttons and joysticks for a DK/DK3? i'd need the two blue buttons, the orange button, and the joystick. i see a bunch of them on bob roberts and happ, but am not sure which are the closest match to the ones that should go on a DK or DK3.

thanks in advance.

If the cp is the metal one then Mikes Arcade has used ones for $20.00.
They are 8 way so you would need to get the 4 way restrictor plate unless 8 way is OK with you.
The wood cp's need the 4 way with longer shaft.
Videogameparts.com might have both a 4 & 8 way in stock.
I don't mind 8 way but some don't like it.
There is no source for accurate color buttons but Mike's are pretty good.
Check Mike's Nintendo inventory for other things you might need like button holders etc.
Quarter Arcade,Arcadeshop and Twisted Quarter are other places that are good for parts as well as good ole Bob Roberts.

thanks - will poke around those places. the CPs are both in pretty good shape (metal for DK3, wood for DK), so i don't need those...

How bad are the buttons? Are they burnt? I might be interested in them.

none are burnt. the blue aren't in bad shape, though they're all different colors of blue (literally - four buttons, four different colors). the orange isn't there at all on the DK - it's white. and on the DK3 it's a red button inside an orange outer sleeve. that's what i was most worried about. i can clean up buttons just fine, but when they're mix-and-match'ed like that it bothers me.

pic attached. the ones on the DK3 are upper left, the ones on the DK are upper right, and the lower row were a bunch of extras in a box that the guy also threw-in with the purchase (i had forgotten about those extras in the box until i dug out the DK control panel this afternoon). so, all sorts of colors in there. the two on the lower left look like the right color to be original, but i'm not positive. and no center button at all for orange...

Only the 3rd one in the bottom row from left looks like an original blue button.
The other 2 blue ones look like what Mikes Arcade carries.
Original blue buttons are a dark blue like the single one.
Also the middle button part is taller than the newer ones.
Compare the 2 blue buttons to the single darker one.
I would just order the one from Mikes and use the 2 matching blue ones.
You could keep hunting for originals in the mean time, they are hard to find.

cool - thanks for the info. will do some cleaning, and wait for the set i ordered from twisted quarter (was a bit cheaper than mike's).

on to joysticks next. they're really in bad shape. gotta pull them apart and see what's going on in the innards, and see if they're worth salvaging or i just order new ones.

If you got the leaf style then those are short buttons and I hope you have the original switch holders,so you can adjust them for the shorter switches.
You will also need to shave them down a little to fit in the hole as those are 1 1/8" and Nintendo used 1 1/16" diameter buttons.
You can use a dremel to accomplish this.
Mikes already come shaved down.
The joystick,if original should just need a good cleaning and lube, but if any parts need replacing, like a spring, then Mikes has all the parts needed.

ahh, good to know. the white button was tough to get out of its hole on the DK - i'll bet it was a 1 1/8" that was just jammed in the smaller hole.

the joysticks will definitely need some replacement parts at the least. the sticks just flop around in both of them. as i say, i'll be poking at them next.

Here is a blow up of the Nintendo stick.
Ignore the red arrow.

so, got the joystick off the DK3 tonight. was a bit of a pain, as they used this greenish type adhesive to glue the nut to the bolt, so i had to use some adhesive solvent to get it off ><.

the bad part - see the attached pic. lots of rust. i can't even get the ball off the stick, so can't get the beast apart. i have it soaking in CLR now...

the good part (1) - the switches are all in great shape.

the good part (2) - in the box of goodies the guy gave me there are some replacement parts for some of the rusted bits. main box, plastic bit on top, spring, switch collar. no spring stopper though...

The ball tops don't come off the shorter sticks.
If the ball is removable it will have a set screw in it.
The spring stopper, that looks like a top hat, part #23-20, is real important and at least Mike has repros now.:)

yep - finding this all out as i go :). got the e-clip off and the switch collar, and the spring is in good shape, but the spring stopper is rusted to the stick. working on that now...

If you can't get it off I have an extra short stick you can have free, just pay shipping.
I also have an extra spring retainer.
Just let me know if you need them.

thanks much. i'll work at it a bit more and let you know.

got it off tonight, but the stick and retainer are still pretty rusted. PMed you for those parts. thanks again :).

got the DK joystick taken apart tonight as well. broken black plastic ring, quite a bit of rust as well, and a bent stick. sigh. at least the switches are good on that one too!
