Hi, my magic sword cab has the player 1 button 2 not working. I tried a wrestlefest and a 19 in 1 and the problem remains. I than switched the wires on buttons 1 and 2 and it started working, with the opposite button now not working, so it's gotta be an issue with the wiring. Do I need a new jamma harness, or is there an easier way to fix this? I can supply pics if they would help.

those 2 buttons should have one common wire where you measure 0 ohms between them.
if you don't then there is a connection issue. cold solder?
try shorting the problem buttons wire over to the other button. does it start working?

Did you swap both wires and that fixed the problem?

Do you know how to use a multimeter?

Are these button leaf switches or are they micro switches?

You most likely do not need a new harness, just to correct the break in the wiring. A multimeter will help you ID the area that has failed.

you might have a short in that buttons wiring. you could start by inpecting the wires and doing a continuity test. Also check the ground wires on the cp.

If you switched the wires and the problem reversed itself, then you eliminated several potential culprits:

1.) The microswitch or leaf switch on the buttons are good
2.) There is no problem with your boards.
3.) The common wire between the buttons is good.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that there's a break in your button-specific wire. Trace it back to the harness.

If you have a multimeter, put it into continuity (buzz mode). You should have continuity between the button end and harness end of that wire.

1.) If you do, then that wire's connection into the harness has come lose or is not making contact with your boards
2.) If you don't have continuity, then there's a break in that wire somewhere.

I have a multimeter but can't check for continuity because the wires go inside the harness instead of being right at the end of the harness.

Also, there's a lot of plugs running from the harness between it and the control panel. Not sure what they are for, unless for maybe to quickly disconnect the cp from the cabinet?

So, is the easy fix to cut the wire just up from the harness and run a new one directly from there to the button?

You have to determine where the break it. The first thing I'd do is check for continuity across the ground daisy chain as suggested above. The easy way to do it is to check from switch to switch with the wires attached.

Then break the connector aparrt and check for continuity from the switch connector to the molex that you parted. This should be fairly easy, just follow the colors.

If you still have continuity it is time to check from the other end of the Molex to the edge connector attached to the board. Again, just follow the colors of the wires.
