Dang - I have two Tempests, a cocktail table and a Cabaret. I also have 3 working boards now (uhhhg, bought a backup board, 'cause I thought one of my boards was shot, turns out it was something else) So my Cabaret Tempest just resets itself during game play, I have a great local guy here in town who will be trouble shooting that soon, we thought it was the board, but like i mentioned, its something else??? So, my backup is my cocktail table Tempest, it has been solid - proves great to test boards in as well. Last night, a guy turns to me at the bar and says, "Hey antz, the Tempest just shut down during my game" - Damn - the we smelled electric burning! I immediately unplugged it, and opened it up. The boards seem to be ok, and the burning smell seems to come from the stuff (looks like a heat something or another?) mounted to the side of the cabinet. thought i would share this with you guys! I am having terrible luck with Tempest! But i refuse to give up! I really love having that game in play!!!!

any ideas would be great! Thanks.

Can you provide a pic of what was burning? Probably the power supply? Has the inside of the machine been cleaned lately?

Sounds like maybe that big resistor on the AR II for 5v fried. Pretty common, the cause is the 5v connection to the pcb probably needs the pins replaced. Any resistance there and that sucker will toast.

I'm betting AR/2. Unstable power will yield resets. I believe that was the next place to look since I know that board was stable in another cab.

Sorry to hear about that Antz!!!

Did you take a look at the power brick to see if any of the wires had melted?

A wise local repair man once told me that the orange wire (labeled F) might need to be soldered down. But I'm sure he'll have it up and running in no time.

Come on people.....this is a Tempest (that sees some serious "on" time). I'll put money on it, it's the monitor. Anyone wanna take a bet?:)

When I saw the thread title I was hoping to see something like this:

Smoking of the Tempest

all i know is that i turned into the Zanzabar Fire Marshall for about 20 seconds - and started poking around in my cooking Tempest - with no clue as too what i was really looking for, mostly just sniffing!
