Burning Super Punch Out EPROMs

I have a Super Punch-Out board set that I've been troubleshooting. I believe I've narrowed my problems down to the set of EPROMs located on the CPU board. However, I'm not sure if I'm programming the EPROMs correctly. I'm currently using a Willem GQ-4x4 and am trying to program Mitsubishi M5L2764K EPROMs (Labeled as 8H 8J, 8K, and 8L on the board), as well as HN4827128G-25 EPROMs (Labeled as 8F). I've tried using generic devices as well as the specific devices listed under Mitsubishi, but haven't had any luck. I've kept all the settings for file format as .bin, read mode as normal, fill mode as normal, and file offset as 000000. EPROMs verify after burning. I'm currently using MAME files from Emu paradise to burn. If anyone has had experience programming these EPROMs, specifically for Super Punch-Out, it would be greatly appreciated if you could briefly walk me through programming my EPROMs. Thanks for your assistance.
 
I would make sure that the Vpp for programming is correct for the particular EPROM model you are using. You can find this in their spec sheets. Once you have this info, you can change the Vpp on the programmer to the correct value.
 
If they seem to burn and verify, why do you think the ROMs are bad?

Would you have any idea how to do this with the GQ USB programmer? I've looked through all of the settings and can't find a manual voltage setting. It seems like the program just bases it off of the chip you select, but that hasn't worked out so far. Thanks for the help.

I ran the Super Punch Out board with Punch Out CPU EPROMs, and the game booted with some graphical glitches. Essentially Punch Out was trying to play with a Super Punch Out palette. Seeing as the game booted with the Punch Out EPROMs that I know work (I didn't program these ones), I'm assuming that the Super Punch Out EPROMs I burned were not burned correctly. Without Punch Out CPU board EPROMs, the game is just a garbled mess.

If they verify, it's hard to imagine a fault. Did you check the burned ROMs with romident? If the reads from the burned files match the ones for spo, then I think the fault is elsewhere.

I compared the .bin files from my dumped EPROMs to those of the .bin files from the MAME database and everything matches identically. It's just odd, considering that with Punchout EPROMs in the CPU board, the game ran Punchout with a SPO character palette. It wasn't perfect and most of the sprites were garbled, but it was a lot more than the unresponsive mess of pixels I'm getting with the SPO CPU EPROMs. I'll move on to the other EPROMs and start checking some of the logic. Thanks for the help.
 
I think there are 2 different romsets for SPO. I remember in the conversion manual mention of using either using the chips with the white labels or the ones with pink label. The Punchout romset on the mainboard determines which SPO set to use, or something like that.
 
I tried burning some extra EPROMs to make a set of Punch-Out chips to test in my working PO board and they didn't work. At this point I'm positive I'm burning the chips wrong in some way, but the chips verify after burning, and when I compared the bin from the programmed EPROM to the original file, everything matched. I'm totally lost at this point. Do I need to burn the EPROM as something besides a .bin, or do I need mess with fill mode, offset, ect.? Any help is appreciated.
 
Had lots of problems using M5L2764. Try other brand.

I have a note in my burning rig about these, I have to manually set something peculiar on my Willem to work with them, and even then I think it's spotty. I've been avoiding the M5L's like the plague for years. I literally throw them out from pulls batches.
 
Good news! I flashed some Fujitsu 2764 EPROMs rather than the M5L2764 and the game plays in my Punch-Out board. Still have to fix the SPO CPU board but I'm a lot closer than I was before and I know for sure the security board works now. Thanks for all the help, especially the recommendation to use a different brand of EPROMs!

As soon as I saw M5L's mentioned in your post, it immediately brought back all kinds of bad memories about using them. Clearly our German friend feels the same :D

This reminds me of trying to burn 2732s for my Galaga, only the AMD ones worked.
