So I am having an error where the game will fully function with sound and all, but flash into this mode where the most of the area except the characters and bonuses etc. will become scrambled and still 'playable' meaning you can move peter around and play the game normally, then flash back to a normal view as it should be, and then eventually flash back to scramble around the characters same as before and so on.

Any clues to what this could be? Sorry, no pics yet.

I am going to try and clean some contacts on the board / harness as when I first hooked it up it wasn't firing up successfully till I jiggled the harness.

I would check your +5. If it's lower than 5 bump it up to 5. If it still spazzes out bump it to 5.1 so on and so forth. Some games require voltages as high as 5.3VDC. Not recommended to go over 5.3 though.

word.. I think you might have it. I played with the +5 etc. when the sucker wouldn't fire up the first time. I'll try that when I get home. Thanks again!

I tried to adjust it. It seemed to affect it's appearance, but not really get much better or eliminate it. Here are some pics of what it looks like working correctly and not. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Nothin? I'm kinda lost on this one. It's frustrating cause I just finished the restoration on it and played fine, then this intermittent issue arose...

maybe its freakin out cause you have so many Peters with only 50points :D
I cant remember did you have the orginal PS and harness in there?

Whoa

Manin when it's freaking out take a voltage reading at the board and see if the +5 is drooping a bit. You can try removing any socketed chips and cleaning their legs. Physically feel the chips when it starts doing this. If you have one that's warmer than the rest you can shoot it with canned air and if the problem goes away momentarily you found your culprit. Ghetto way of trouble shoting but sometimes you get lucky that way.

Riki,

I have an un-hacked harness with a switcher plugged in using an adaptor.

Dead,

I checked it at the board on the trace past the harness, sits in line with the reading at the switcher. I'll try your troubleshooting method. So, when it's freaking out, just feel the chips and if one's warmer, spray it with air to cool it? Does that change the resistance at the leg or something enough to affect it?

Thanks

Well I think I got it. I basically pulled the board and pulled a few of the chips and used a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. This didn't work, so I pulled all of the chips and did this, and also touched up a few solder joints that seemed suspect or a little cold looking from previous repairs. This seemed to work! I have had it running for 20 min. or so successfully, so I think we're good. Thanks for the help, I'll be sure to post if it fails again.
