I bought the High Score save kit a while back and have now put this into my Burgertime. I can't seem to get it to work and only will display FFFFFFFFF across all the highscores.

Anyone else run into this?

YES!!

I installed mine today and it worked fine. Played a game, saved a score, powered down, powered up, score still there.

Come back several hours later and powered up and I get the FFFFFF. Anyone figured this out?
 
Correct on mine I wasn't aware this would cause a problem

It's not always a problem... it depends on the switcher. The Simtek NVRAMs don't like some of the newer switchers (Happ Power Pro is one common PS I often hear about).
Here are your choices for getting it to work:

1. Swap the switcher with an older model (the classic Peter Chou style from 80's/90's seem to work fine).
2. Replace the Simtek NVRAM with a battery-backed SRAM (like the ST MK48Z02).
3. Use the original linear power supply.

Where can you purchase a high score save kit for Burgertime?
 
I would try changing the 100uf 16v capacitors at location C2 on the top board and C26 on the bottom pcb to 470uf 16v. Just like what the Q-bert high score save required for reliable saves. It should be that simple. No need to change the power supply. Try this before swapping out the power supply and post your results.

Changing the filter caps on the PCB can certainly help, and is a good idea in general. However, that will not solve all the issues with some of these newer switchers... they simply shut off too fast.

Do they skimp on the output filter caps?

Possibly... but I doubt it (I've seen similar behavior from expensive lab power supplies). I've always just assumed that they have an aggressive bleeder resistor, but I've never opened one up to find out.

I switched my out with an older model Peter Chou but still have the problem, how can i tell the age of the Peter Chou stytle Switchers?
 
I just installed HSS on four boardsets and didnt have any problems with them. I was running them on a switcher on my bench rig.
 
Sorry to necropost this thread, but just got a BT cocktail with a freeplay/HS kit installed that was displaying the FFFFFF in the high score table. as suggested in this thread, I set dip switch 8 to "on" and the table was initialized as indicated. My question - Do I keep dip switch 8 in the "on" position or turn it back to the "off" position once initialized?

Nevermind, reset the dip to off and all is well.

so yeah i have the same kit... and months of the machine being off, i turned it back on and i had some garbage ascii random characters showing up for the high scores...

so i ignore it and let it slide and leave it turned off for another 1-2 months, and when i turned it back on, all the scores were either reset to 0's or all F's.

is the nvram the culprit in this crime?
 
More likely a voltage issue. Either coming on too slow or its a tad low. Measure the 5v on the pcb at or near the nvram and see what you have.
