Bulls in the China-Cade?

I've got no problem with touching...I like the games to be played, just not abused. Bringing games back to original condition can be on the expensive side and time consuming, but thats not what bothers me... having a mild (ok chronic) OCD side compells me to stock extra parts... but I just don't have replacements for some games. The original controls that needed replacing didn't get loose, worn and crappy feeling for no reason.. And while it probably didnt happen overnight, seeing some neanderthal play bitd probably didnt help. I just people to play games normally, not overhard is all.

Tom, if you're worried about abuse of a particular title or titles that is/are rare, minty or has expensive/odd controls, why not simply remove it from the arcade entirely for the event?

Whats the point of having them if you don't want anyone touching them?

Im with Fritz. Short of taking a shit on the games or completely destroying them, let them be. They were meant to be played. How many times did you kick the shit out of a coin door if you played poorly or punched the bezel out of anger in the arcades? It happened all the time. These things will be fine.

I don't kick the shit out of the machine even if I play poorly. I play more and get better But I am glad you allow people to punch out your Bezel and kick the shit out out of your coin door of your arcade machines.

Is it even possible to break or otherwise damage the jump button on a Donkey Kong by hitting it with your hand? I mean, really. Think about it. It's a piece of plastic, designed with the express purpose of being pressed. The only way I could envision anyone damaging one is by melting it with a cigarette (which is why the start buttons on DK's are always trashed), or smashing it with a hammer.

O RLY?

And Im glad that you are so level headed you never get heated while playing. Congrats.

Yeah good idea. I've contemplated this on occasion. But I can't relocate them outta sight because there is no where else to out them... And I don't really want to lie or or try to disable the game temporarily because I want the game to be played and enjoyed, some of these are peoples favorites plus the more savvy, helpful dudes might investigate and "fix" the problem, :D

I guess I just gotta man up and be more insistent on not going too hard on the controls, heh.

Having two younger kids, they frequently have their friends over and eventually they ask to go to the game room. I'm not the fastest repair tech so when something breaks it can take me awhile to fix it. With that in mind I always try to tell them how old the games are and that if they break something...I have to fix it - I won't be happy about that.

All in all that seems to work. Only the really young ones do I have to 'police', but thats not so much anymore.

I have been known to not turn on certain games when certain kids come over...

Battlezone seems to be the one game that the little kids like to get on the step and hang on the sticks. One of the bellows is blown out now and the other isn't far behind it. I do put a stop to that when I see it.

Haha - I didn't break them, I got them on used control panels. Seems like red tents always have some broken ones.

Wow. I stand corrected. You sure have some heavy hands. I am impressed. I've definitely never seen a Nintendo button broken in that manner. Have you considered a career in boxing?

Thanks but it's not being level headed playing the games, it's just because of all the electronic equipment I have repaired in the past.

Understood.

FWIW, I don't sit and kick the shit out of my games. I don't baby them either, though. If we are being completely honest I don't worry about things happening to joysticks, buttons, etc because they are easily replaced. I've taught my 3 year old what is and isn't appropriate and he understands as much as a 3 year old can. Do I cringe when he constantly hits the flipper buttons on my pin? Nah. Life is too short to worry about having to fix the small stuff.

The simply way to deal with a game you don't want people to play:

Affix a "OUT OF ORDER" sign on it and unplug it.

I let the people play them how they want! (with in reason of course).
The way I see it, these machines were MENT to be played and played hard. Could you imagine playing your favorite game back in the day and NOT playing hard? I can't. That was half the fun.
I must admit, I DO cringe sometimes knowing how much time and work I put into my machines......
Most people bang buttons hard, smack the joysticks around, those can be fixed easily....They DON'T do any real cosmetic damage to the machines......

What is with in reason to you ? Yes, the machine were design to be played hard back when they were introduced. Back when parts could be had by just by calling the company and saying Give me part number XYZ and it was shipped and installed. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. A Lot of the classic arcade machine company have long gone belly up and parts are either hard to find or they can not be found.

If banging on joystick and buttons and it doesn't do any real damage, In theory these items should never wear out or break down. Most of use know what a new joystick and buttons play like. We make comment on how it improves the game play and playability of the game. We brag about the boost in high score. We know it makes a difference. If you really want to play rough on a machine. Go buy your own.

For me, I guess it would be like owning a classic car and NEVER driving it.....
If you have an original 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder, and it is a garage queen, that is one thing.....
If you have a restored 1965 Mustang.......DRIVE IT!!!!!!
