Recently got my first Pinball, Gorgar. I've been fixing it up, mostly just cleaning, waxing and new rubber. I took off all the plastics to clean them and noticed that under the "Pit" plastic in the upper left corner are two light sockets that are empty. They are bigger sockets than the 44/47 bulb sockets, more like auto bulb size. Does anyone have an idea of what size bulb goes in them? Would they be 6v also? Also, there was a piece of cardboard that a previous owner had put behind a target on the left side. I removed it when I was cleaning, but now, looking at the pics I wonder if maybe it was protecting the target from banking too hard into the wood side. Thoughts?

can't really tell for sure by your photo what's up with the cardboard. A closeup would probably help.

The two empty sockets back by the pit are for the #89 flasher bulbs that come on with the magnet.

Thanks

Thanks for the info on the bulbs. Yeah, the cardboard was much easier to see in the photo before I downsized it for posting. Here is a close up, what do you think?

My guess would be that the cardboard was put there to stop the ball from getting stuck because the stopper arm (invented that term just now) on the stand up target is broken/missing.

You'll need to replace that stand-up or replace the broken piece. You can see what I'm talking about in this picture:

More pictures of a Gorgar I restored back in 2007 can be found in the gallery on my site.

Like Phet's favourite house boy, it takes a pounding. But, unlike precious Enrique, it just doesn't hold up to the abuse.

Ahahahahahahahahaha, fucking 'Precious Enrique' he says. Ahahahahahahahahahahaha. Who the fuck? Ahahahahahahahahaha

Thanks

Thanks all for the info. I think I have a couple of those "Stopper arms" missing. I guess that is a pretty extensive fix. Have to get under the playfield. I'll have to take a look.

It seems more daunting than it really is. Do you know how to lift the playfield? If not, we can walk you though what it will take to get that thing fixed :)

First off, That's a great photoset, Lindsey. Did you repaint the playfield? It looks great. Also How did you get the underneath photo's? Did you turn the playfield over? As far as my machine goes. I just cleaned it, and put new rubber on. During that process I tried to lift the playfield but as I was lifting, it felt like a 2 person job. I felt like the plastics in the upper corners were going to catch on something and snap. Also I couldn't really find something that looked like it would give a good stable bite for the support rod. I admit it, I chickened out. I let the playfield back down and went back to cleaning. The game seems to play fine most of the time. When I showed up to pick up the machine from where I bought it. The voice sound was almost inaudible, but I took it anyway. By the time I got it home and set up (350 miles later), made all the connections and turned it on. Everything worked fine (sounded fine too). So I hate to mess with a good thing. My GOR drop targets sometimes don't reset, but then I turn off the machine for a while and when I turn it back on the work fine. I will probably venture underneath the playfield, but I want to collect together some parts so I can fix multiple things at once. I'd also like to get the coin mech working again. I got a lot of quarters and kind of like the feel of having to put a quarter in to play. I don't want to get it torn apart and not get it back together for a while.

Hey, also any suggestions on finding those Stopper Arms or do you think I need to replace the whole switch mech? Also, the #89 bulbs. Is it possible that they are both missing because the were causing some trouble, maybe causing overheating? As you can tell I worry a lot that changing things will cause bigger problems. I was kind of on the lookout for a parts machine or playfield, but then I got sucked in to buying an old Coke machine and have been dividing my time between my children (Gorgar and Coke).

Nope. Just lucky. Believe it or not I bought 3 Gorgars including that one and IIRC that one was the worst condition.

Also How did you get the underneath photo's? Did you turn the playfield over?

At that time I just lifted the playfield and leaned it against the head. Specifically I'm saying I pulled off the lock down bar, removed the glass, lifted the playfield holding on to the apron, pulled it toward myself and lifted it further leaning it against the head. I couldn't find a good picture of what I'm talking about but this should give you the right idea:

Today I use a rotisserie for playfield restorations. It's a godsend for major restoration work.

As far as my machine goes. I just cleaned it, and put new rubber on. During that process I tried to lift the playfield but as I was lifting, it felt like a 2 person job. I felt like the plastics in the upper corners were going to catch on something and snap.

It can be a tricky thing. If you're lifting it straight up without pulling it toward yourself the upper apron plastics were probably catching. You were right to stop. Experience is expensive. Just try the method I mention above but again, stop if it feels like something bad is going to happen.

Also I couldn't really find something that looked like it would give a good stable bite for the support rod. I admit it, I chickened out. I let the playfield back down and went back to cleaning.

There are a couple of little circles routed out of the bottom of the playfield. That's where the prop rod is supposed to go. I rarely use the prop rod and usually end up lifting the playfield all the way up and leaning it on the head. Just make sure you've got the bolts in the head.

I would probably try to find a used target assembly on eBay or there may be a local collector on here who will just give you one (you should add your location). See who chimes in.

Also, the #89 bulbs. Is it possible that they are both missing because the were causing some trouble, maybe causing overheating?

Anything is possible. I would probably just stick the bulbs in and see what happens.

(Gorgar and Coke).

Sounds like a fun Saturday night ;)

Thanks for all the help. I live in the western Suburbs of Philadelphia. There is a guy, not too far away, Gameroom Collectables. He had some old playfields for sale, but he just bought a Gorgar machine that he is going to fix up and is using the parts for that. I may be able to get some leftovers. BTW, I'm still figuring out how to work setting up my profile here. I tried to add a signature and will work on an Avatar but I'm spending all my spare time on my machines (and my taxes)
