I replaced some bulbs in a few lit push buttons with 73s... However the 73 bulbs are all very very dim. What bulb should I use to make them as bright as whats in there? Clearly what's in there aren't 73 but look like it. What ARE these, then?

Is there a number stamped onto the original bulbs? Do you know what voltage is going to the bulb socket....take a meter reading. Without knowing the voltage, it's impossible to give a recommendation.

no stamp... I looked hard. I'll have to check voltage. Perhaps this bulb is too strong for it, which is why it comes through so weakly.

A 73 is a 7 volt bulb. I would assume your light sockets are being fed 5VDC from a switcher...just a guess, since I don't know the set-up/game. A #73 should light fine with 5VDC.

You could always feed 12VDC off a switcher and use #74 bulbs.

No, according to Happ, it's a 14 volt bulb. I was just curious as to what the lesser voltage alternative was (that still fit the socket and what not).

73's are 12-14 volts bulbs. #86 is a 6 volt mini wedge.
