Building the BarnCade

Sorry another boring update but getting a little more interesting, I like lighting :D

Knocked out the exterior lights, outlets, and doorbell camera so I can finish insulation and vapor barrier. Last roll of R19 finally arrived. Also starting picking up vintage 70s and 80s furniture for the living room lounge area.

Went with Govee wall lights by all the doors and installed an outlet by the eaves for Govee RGB permanent outdoor lights

Vapor barrier and girts done, loft framing should be done this week. The free span LVLs are two laminated so should be good for that span.

Next up is interior wiring. I've mapped out 20 amp circuits and plan to have around 7 machines per circuit. Still figuring out the lighting plan but I have solid direction I think.

And since the ground is thawed we can trench power and network from the house panel to the barn subpanel.

Pro tip: smart home connected switches for your game circuits are a win.

Working in something and being able to flip that circuit on with your voice from across the room via homekit has been a gamechanger.

Can confirm.

All I have to do is say "Hey google, turn on the NeoGeo/Arcade (its a chewlix)/Primal Rage/MiSTer/Saturn/Dreamcast" and I'm good to go. Smart switches are the best.

Yes, and for bonus points I've set up control of the 4 switches that handle the normal lighting in my basement to "Work Light" mode. So when I come downstairs all I need to say to a ceiling mounted HomePod is "Hey Siri, Turn on the work lights". I've also mapped that to the smart button on my AppleWatch so I can toggle them all on or off at will.

Then I have an "Activate Party Mode" where it shuts off all the normal lights in the basement, turns on all the games, turns on all my backlights and moving lights, and starts playing Journey - "Separate Ways" over the sound system. Absolutely one of my favourite things to do when showing people around the collection is taking them down a dark set of stairs and asking it to "Activate Party Mode" people just loose it. lol

And then for the final party trick, I also have a Streamdeck setup on a computer down there with a "Sleep" button. When pressed, It shuts down in sequence all the game banks, the arcade lighting, any of my main "work lights", and then checks the time of day against sunrise/sunset. If it's dark outside it turns on a light at the top of my stairs so I can see my way out of the basement, before also putting the computer to sleep.

Thank you for the ideas! I will be looking into all of this.

No worries, I have a bunch of other things I've built with shortcuts, automations etc. Mixed in a bunch of Aquara and Meross bits as well. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Joe... also look up Grade8 arcade (@TastyBoogerz)... he has some great ideas in his thread about lighting controls too!

I keep making notes about all the cool stuff I see(lighting, game power switching, macros, etc) I'm totally gonna rip off some of these good ideas when I can finally get around to sorting out my gameroom... for now, I'm away from home for an extended period... I'm still in acquisition mode... so yeah, my gameroom looks like an arcade collectors storage unit right now! 😕

But, I will get there!

Finished sheeting the loft, trenched power and network from the house (in between rain storms), have the sub panel wired.

Loft height came out perfect, I have 7.5' of height below and above the loft.

Main lights and large commercial ceiling fan should be delivered this week. Excited to get lights and power LIVE in the barn.

Started measuring and marking where arcade rows will go to confirm number of circuits and outlet placements.

Also I have to build stairs yet, I think I'm going to do floating stairs and railings inspired the Brady Bunch stairs.

No idea how this will look when its done, but man, it gives Luna City feels (one of my earliest memories of being "wowed" in this hobby way back when) and I'm loving it.

Awesome so far! Can't wait to see all the progress and the final money shots. The building with its height eerily looks like Luna City Arcade. RIP.

Thanks for skimming the thread.

Are you going to rent this for wedding party's when you're done ? I think you could recover all your costs and pay the rent that way ,that's want we do to the farm I work at in my town .we need to build a pole barn like this and get rid of the tent .
