we have all heard of neo geo games where you can plug in different games, well i'm bored and thought of a new project. i want to build a sonic the hedge hog based sega genesis "neo geo" game. basically the brains will be a sega genesis mounted inside an arcade cabinet that i will build. i am going to mount it on the back door with a slot for the game for easy changing. the monitor will be a 19 inch lcd monitor. heres the question i have... i tore apart a controller to figure out how to wire up arcade buttons and a joystick. the controller board will be my "IPAC" . i can t remember if the genesis controller was a 4 way or 8 way controller. has anyone ever done this to a genesis controller. i can figure out the L R Up Down but the other 4 combinations are baffling me?

Its 8way but you only are going to have 4 switches on any joystick so just wire up,left, right, down and it will automatically do 8way for you, and very easy to hack the controller to make it work, I hacked snes controller when I was eleven and made arcade stick from it and it worked good so Im sure you can figure it out.Just mount the console int he bottom coin door so you can easily open the door and change games, I am thinking of doing this to plastic composite die hard cab

SNES and genesis controllers act the same way. Follow my cheesy diagram and you'll be done in no time. Just a thought: if you go with a CRT instead of an LCD, you'll be able to run a few light gun games like T2 and what not.

And another side note: I've used a SNES and a YOBO 3-in-1 system hooked up to my flat screen plasma, and I must say, I hated it. The graphics seemed too sharp. I preferred it much better on the CRTs. Also, the aspect ratio really throws off your sonic gaming.

Yes I agree it will look better on a crt

genesis

that game is pretty cool. i cant figure out if i want to put the game slot on the control panel or on the back door to hide it. i guess a crt would be a better idea. i was just trying to do a slim cabinet instead of the typical bulky arcade cab. to answer why i dont want to use mame... i already have a mini ms. pacman that is mame, and getting a computer and ipac would be alot more expensive since i already have the genesis and controllers. this whole project was meant to be CHEAP

cheap is good.

As for the placement of the console, if mounted in the CP, you'll need some real estate reserved for it. Consoles hog space, and some panels just wont cooperate with mounting and placement where you'd like.
If mounted anywhere on the back, sides, top, or interior, you'll hate having to fight with the cab to change carts.

So, I guess my advice would be mounting it to the CP interior. Here's how I did my cartridge mame rig control panel:

does your game have 3 different systems running on it. how the hell did you do that. hat is awesome!!!

YOBO, my friend. Cheap Chinese crap for sure, but it gets the job done. ;)

The exact console I used was YOBO's FC3 Plus. Sega Genesis, SNES, NES. It allowed use of a light gun on NES games too.

here's one of my videos on it:

Rob Ivey, 68k on the neo-geo forums used to mod those with a JAMMA edge connector. You just plugged it into your cab and it worked.

did you have that on CL a few months back? I may have just seen it while searching on google or something... either way, it looks familier, from before I joined the forums

Yup. Listed it and a few other of my games to pay off the Tax-man. I actually had sold all the stuff that I needed to, but forgot to pull the Playchoice ad. Sure enough someone called me about it. Long story short, they hired me to build them a 60-in-1, I whipped one out within a couple weeks (with no money down :0) and sold both to them. I really didn't need or want to sell the Playchoice X, but for the amount I made off it, I figured I could always build another one.
