Building a reproduction Dynamo HS-5 Arcade Cabinet - please help?

Hello,
I recently came into the possession of a Dynamo HS-5 Arcade Cabinet with Neo Geo MV-1 PCB and I must say that I have become hooked :)

I am now interested in building my own reproduction cabinet (with a few liberties) to use in a separate build with a Raspberry Pi unit. I had assumed that I could find the dimensions/measurements of my Dynamo HS-5 cabinet online and simply have the components precision cut on a CNC for assembly but alas that does not appear to be the case (though someone please correct me if I am wrong).

As such I have started to measure my own existing cabinet and build my own blueprints using AutoCAD.
Now, to be fair, I am certainly no AutoCAD wizard but I am trying my best and this is where I was hoping I could get some assistance from the community. I have done my first pass on measuring the cabinet and putting together a basic DWG file (with multiple layers) of the various components BUT I would vary much appreciate if someone could take a look at this file and provide some feedback on how to make it more professional and complete (and maybe point out any glaring errors if they see them :)).

My ultimate goal is to get this file to the point where it could be easily handed over to any CNC service and they could cut all the necessary components out of MDF to those specifications for whomever provided it to them.

Note: All measurements are in Centimeters at this time.

I have attached images from my dwg file to show where I am so far and if anyone is willing to lend a hand I would be happy to provide the AutoCAD drawing file as well.

Well since this is your very first post.. I will help you.
DON'T DO IT
Pick a different cab , something lighter and smaller.
I turn down free dynamo cabs that people offer me. I dont think reproducing one
would even be worth it.
Id rather see somebody reproduce a moppet cab than a dynamo hs5

I have not come across any plans for the HS-5 cabinet. Other plans are located on the website listed in the footer of the post.

Dptwiz has a thread detailing how he traces cabinets here
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=224230

I also detail out my method here as well
http://www.classicarcadecabinets.com/tracing---method-1.html

Happy to help / bounce ideas as well.

Thanks
Brian

Thanks Brian! That is an awesome resource and actually helps me to verify my measurements against the Dynamo HS-1 dxf file. Which I'm happy to say I'm within a few millimeters on everything :) so I think it's safe to assume that I got it right.

I'm going to keep working on my own file for now and see if I can start thinking about ways to make improvements to this design while retaining the external look. I'll be happy to post a new version once I have some of those changes in place and maybe a bit more of the 3D model completed.

Thanks again!

Hey VertexGuy,
I certainly agree with you on the weight (340 pounds is a bit hefty) but I am still interested in keeping this unit approx. the same size. Generally I'm looking at capturing the look and feel from the Dynamo HS-5 while not necessarily keeping all the same faults (think of it a bit like the difference between an original e-type jaguar vs. eagle speedster :) )

For starters I'm looking at trying out a different material such as medium density overlay plywood (MDO) instead of MDF to drop the weight (around 64LB vs 95LB for a 4x8 slab). If you have other suggestions for how to improve the design (modernize it) though please let me know as I am open to incorporating new ideas.

yeah , a drawer under the coin door that comes out so you can change the boards instead
of pulling the whole damn control panel out.

Awesome job getting what you have already. I was in a position about half a year ago where I was trying to build a Dynamo HS-5 cab but ran into the same problems you did. Nobody has any dimensions posted anywhere online that would allow one to reproduce it. I eventually just bought a cab and had it shipped out to me. I keep saying that I'm going to measure it so we have it documented somewhere, but life and injuries keep getting in my way. Thanks for stepping in where I failed miserably.

Well he is active but doesn't seem active on the website. I sent an email about adding plans for MK1 and he said he would but never did. This was earlier this week.

If someone in Northern VA has a donor cabinet I can borrow for a week, I could get the plans traced up and posted.

Hello,
Sorry for the absence was working on other home projects (new hardwood floors!).

Here is a link to the DWG file that I have been working on:
https://mega.nz/#!mlEBza5L!gFoyyKcSphSrSiuZ1R1HoLQTHYEfARKjSUNpkENWbpc

It worked from another device but let me know if you have any issues. If you have been trying to PM or Email me apologies but I haven't seen anything come into my mailbox. I will check my settings today to see if I can figure out why.

When did I say that? I actually don't recall ever receiving an email from you to be honest :S

In any case the DWG has been added to the forum post so please feel free to have at it :)

Would you be ok if I added the plans to the website? If so, how would you like me to credit you for the plans?

Thank you
Brian

not to sound disrespectful at all but that CAD doesn't look accurate. I've had numerous dynamo HS1 and HS5 cabs and this doesn't seem accurate.

There are also two dynamo HS5 models. Dynamo was notorious for putting out undocumented and/or undesignated cabs with tons of variations. The HS5 that most people know has the detachable base and plywood pull out shelf etc

Just off the top of my head.

- missing the detachable base.
- missing the control panel blocking.
- missing the pull out shelf.
- the second gen, most common HS5 has a steep, more vertical angle for the monitor.
- there are two variations of the universal model. The later version has has a shelf to hold the monitor in the vertical position.
- missing the monitor panel in the back.

Go for it! I have no issue with sharing.
Just maybe point out that this isn't 100% complete and I was going to make a couple changes to make the unit easier to deal with.

Basically you're right; this isn't 100% complete as I got distracted with other home projects. So is some things that are missing they are missing cause I hadn't put them in yet :)

As for the monitor angle that should be correct based on my measurements (maybe mine is more of a "variant". Should be easily adjusted in autocad though if you think it's off.

Thanks for posting your plans. It seems like these may be for the older hs5. Did yours have a visible horizontal seem between the control panel and the coin door for the section of the drawer that pulled out? I think the newer cabs the pullout was completely concealed behind the control panel. Also like 404 said I think the angle of the monitor must have changed.

Yes it does have a visible seem.
