So I just picked up a budweiser tapper upright (in great shape by the way)
and it was partially working when I got it.
It would either boot right up and have a little graphics glitch in the bartenders head but play perfectly otherwise, or it would go through a rainbow screen, and a random series of colors, then boot up and play the same way.

Well I got some ribbon cables from bob roberts because the ones that were on there were bad. Crinkly, brittle, etc. seen them on tron like that before too.

Anyway, I put on the new ribbon cables (properly after double checking his website) Now the screen just comes up like it's not syncing properly.
It DOES NOT coin up, so I am pretty sure it's not a sync issue, though that's what it looks like.

Not sure where to go from here, aside from pulling out an ax and teaching this mother fucking game a lesson.

Have you tried putting the original cables back on to see if that fixes it?

If so then you've still got the new cables on wrong.

when you say sync, is it scrolling? cause if you have actual video but it won't play, the ss/io board isn't plugged in right. otherwise it might be on the cpu or video boards. i'd double check the cables though. i hate replacing those damn things.

Is the harness power connector to the board burnt?

You sure you plugged the video cable correctly into the board?(plugs into the middle board. make sure you don't bend a pin)

triple check those cables.

yes put the old cables back on and no dice
the cables are on correctly

yes it's a diagonal scrolling, and it does not coin up making me think it's not a sync issue.

I quintiple checked the cables. When I had them on wrong, I got a white screen, now that they are on correctly, it is a colorful screen that could be a tapper start screen but you can't tell due to the diagonal scrolling.
The video cable only goes on one way. It has a plug in the molex to insure that.

Tron Guy,

If I recall correctly there are 2 likely looking places on the MCR boardset that the video connector can go to and they are often confused.

Can you look for another potential place for it to plug in?

My apologies in advance if I recall incorrectly.

:D Dude, I know how you feel. I've been struggling with a similar issue with my Tapper. Still haven't pinpointed it yet. Have you checked the power supply? I rebuilt mine with Bobs kit, but I still think it might be an issue. I officially hate MCR games...

This has a switcher in it. I checked the +5, etc from the switcher, I didn't bother with the original power supply (concerning voltages)

It was mostly working with a little glitch or 2. I changed cables (had them on wrong) white screen.

Put the originals back on, it worked again, put the new ones on, no workie.
old ones again, no workie, new ones no workie.

fuck this pile of shit. :)

I might gut it and turn it into either a popcorn machine or a chair

TG,

Just searched and found this on an old thread here, courtesy of Robotron Jon:

There is a brown wire (with the individual wires in it) that connects the video from the video board to the monitor. Remember that the video comes from the second board, not the main board. There is a connector on the main board which is exactly the same connector and it's a common mistake to accidentally use that one instead of the one on the second board.

---

Have you double checked this?

thanks for looking that up. It is impossible to actually do that in my opinion.
The molex connector has a plug in it to insure that it only fits one way, and it will not fit on the main board that he is referring to.
thanks bud

your 100% worng on that one as the video cable has the key on pin 3 and the top board also has a connector thats keyed to pin 3.

take a look at the boards in this ebay auction and you can see.

when I was working on DOT the video was not locking and the problem was one of pins on the video connector got bent..

If you have another midway game, try swapping the video cables. Also check for cold solder joint on the connector for the video cable.

let's suppose the video pin got bent.
As long as the connector got fully inserted onto the pin, it shouldn't be a problem should it.

I did a quick look at all the connectors, and the solder looks to be fine.

this is now a dead project for a couple weeks.

well I am going to take the boards up to p1899m's house and test them in his rootbeer tapper, at some point.

even so, I haven't connected it to the top board on any occasion. I had a cocktail tapper so I know where the connectors go.

ok took the boards to dan's. they don't work.

comes up with a black screen and little white blocks in random spots. almost looks like a pong game. :)

who fixes these?
