I bought an Attack from Mars last week and have been replacing various small things on it, i.e. replacing black rubber rings for white, installed a new ship bracket, etc. and now it's in really great shape. The only thing left that's bothering me are some air bubbles in the translite. Is it safe to peel it off the backglass and smooth it out, or is that a major tear risk? I know it's not really that big of a deal, but it just keeps catching my eye and I'd like it smoothed out if possible.

Yes it is fine. It is just static build up that keeps the translite material away from the glass. Clean both sides of the glass and then use a dryer sheet on the translite before placing it back on the glass.
