i just picked up a taito bubble bobble pcb. everything seems to work fine...but test mode seems unusual to me. nothing on the screen except a large white square positioned in the middle towards the bottom of the screen, and it plays samples of all the music and sounds from the game. no options, and pressing buttons on the controllers does nothing. is this what the test mode is supposed to be like? i can post a screen shot later this evening if necessary.

i also have a romstar version of this game that has some minor graphics issues. (test mode does not work at all on this one) i was considering keeping it for parts...but was wondering if i can safely swap the socketed chips between the two versions of the game?

I don't have any experience with a real PCB, but there's 2 test modes in MAME (I don't know how you get to either one on a real PCB), but one of them is similar to how you describe. Although it's a completely white screen with the various game themes playing. The other one shows the dipswitches and game switch status (joystick, buttons, credit switches, etc)

thanks for the responses!

apparently, both boards are romstar. i assumed the one was taito since it did not have the super mode and normal mode selection when a new game is started. so i guess that means the rom chips should be swappable...
