hey guys,

i have had my bttf pinball now for about one year without any real issues. sometimes the dot matrix display goes out in the back glass but then always comes back on. i have been playing the game and all of a sudden a bunch of things went wrong.

-when powering up the game, the dot matrix display consistently stays off until i start playing the game.
-A02-7 shows up on the bottom line of the dot matrix display when initially turned on.
-none of the kicks work including the top left VUK (vertical up kick), clock tower lock/VUK, the ball movers under the data east sign in the front of the game, and the ball kickout to the plunger.
-top left VUK seems to get stuck (maybe this is a symptom of it not working as well.
-all switches DO work when putting in test mode
-"flag error 1 day" comes up on dot matrix display in test mode
-2.5A 250V fuse looks bad (bottom fuse in the backbox).

i've uploaded some pics to webshots here:

thanks for the help!

The display sounds like a board problem. Have you done the typical reseating of all socketed chips on your boards?

When a group of solenoids don't work, it's usually a fuse. Did you replace that bad looking fuse?

replaced fuse...now burning smell with blown fuse

replaced the fuse today 2.5A, 250V. the fuse i put in the game looks to be fairly thick and ribbed inside the canister, not one of the thin ones. anyway, after i replaced the fuse, the upkick worked and the kickout to the plunger semi-worked. when ball 1 would go past the flippers, the game would start totaling up the score as it should, but the ball would kick out to the plunger immediately instead of waiting for the score totaling to end. after about 2 balls, they both stopped working just like the problem was before but then i smelled something burning...this did not happen before with the burning smell. i did not see smoke, but i looked at the fuse i just replaced and it was brown inside the canister. not sure what is causing this...thoughts?

i uploaded 3 more pics to the webshots album for BTTF pinball problem. the fuse is the bottom one on the top left part of the board:

thanks!

sound like you 1. smoked a coil 2. because you smoked a driver and predriver(transistors)

ok i looked at the pics, not enough detail to be certain, but...

on the power supply board there are 2 1n4004 diode's just below the giant heat sink, dmm that and see if they read .4 to .6 if no REPLACE

on your ppb(playfield power board) dmm the same black diode's if not .4 to .6 REPLACE

then dmm the large black transistors(tip36c) there are only a few on your board(makes it easier:) if not reading .4 to .6 REPLACE

then remove your affected coil and if the sleeve isn't melted wipe it all down put back together, pay attention to the diode on the coil how its connect to the lugs , no need to dmm it REPLACE

after you've done all that let us know the result

and we'll go from thereL:)

I'm admittedly not familiar with DE pins. Do a group of solenoids get controlled by one set set of a driver and a pre-driver?

multimeter diagnosing

hey guys,

i apologize for not getting around to working on this game and getting back to you in time. i was involved in a car accident and suffered a nasty concussion for almost 3 months now.

when you said dmm certain parts, wouldy ou please be more specific. i am vaguely aware on how to test these components with a digital multimeter. what setting shouild i put it on, what legs or parts of the components should i put on which stick of the tester (red vs black).

thanks, guys...i really want to get this puppy going so i can play it again. great scott!
