Brand New 19 inch Vision Pro CRT Heads Up

I thought I'd add my experience to this thread.

I bought 2 monitors from the guy.

He explained at great length how well he would pack them (even though in the thread he said "as I am paying UPS to pack this").

Well, they were poorly packed and both tubes were destroyed. See pics.

He took 2 cardboard boxes and taped them together, packed with wadded up paper, and a couple of small sticks for some reason (you can see them in the last pic). They were
probably destroyed before they left his city.

The monitors were also all VGA, not CGA as advertised.

After much aggravation with paypal, I received a full refund today. He couldn't get the money out of paypal himself to refund me, and didn't have the funds in his bank account (and had several failed attempts to refund via his bank account), so paypal advised him to ask me to open a claim, which I did...so paypal could access the "on hold" funds to refund to me. Over 1 month later, and I have a refund.

I'm still looking at a fee to dispose of the tubes.

I saved the 2 chassis, which appear OK, as they were protected. They are VGA, not CGA, as advertised, but still NOS and nice looking. I'll post up a for sale ad for these (cheap) if anyone wants them, I don't know if there's much interest there. I have the chassis and yokes.

Yeah, this took a while...check out this email thread history.

Money actually appeared in my account today.

I do think this guy tried to pack the monitors well, and I do think he tried as hard as possible to get me my refund. It was frustrating, but I got good response from him and I think he did everything he could given the circumstances.

I wouldn't say he did "everything" he could. If he'd actually had UPS pack the monitors, then you guys would have working monitors upon delivery. I've had them pack and ship 2 monitors over the years and they made it fine.

I also had UPS pack and ship a monitor once and it arrived OK.

Of course he should have done that. He also should have advertised them as VGA, not CGA...in which case probably none of us would have bought one, etc.

When I said he did everything he could, I was specifically referring to trying to process my refund.

I was able to pull these out with my bare hands with very little effort.

Very true.

I filed a PayPal claim and got paid for mine. I am looking a $25 disposal fee for the broken CRT, but I at least have a good monitor frame that offsets it.

Pain in the ass, but all's well that ends well...

disposal fee? for a tube... never heard of that before... heck landfill takes old tubes for free where I'm at... no hazmat fee, nothing.....
what I would do is look around your local and take advantage of free ewaste drop offs....

that sucks what happened to you... good thing I drove 2 hrs to get my 25" crt...

They're considered hazardous waste

When a monitor frame leaves the neck area completely unprotected, shipping shouldn't even be considered.

Shipping monitors just requires proper packing.

I bought several from Happ back in the day which were shipped to me and have had UPS pack and ship others. Never had a problem. Until now :D

Paying $25 to dispose of a CRT is absurd. Landfills are full of millions of the things. I would just put it in a sack, smash it up, and toss said sack into the trash with everything else.

I had an old CRT computer monitor to toss and left it next to my curbside bin and, when I found it still sitting there after pickup day (must have been same "toxic" reason), I simply put said monitor into a trash bag and binned it instead. The binned monitor disappeared with the next pickup.

They have lead in them. I think they don't want it to leech into the groundwater if the landfill's containment system fails. The money is for special handling.

What's crazy is that CRTs cost $25 to dispose, but I can take any chemical I want in there for free. And charging $25 is just going to give people a reason to dispose of them improperly.

The system is broken hope the new president fixes it ;)

I recycle my tubes. I mean, they fit nicely into the big blue recycle bin anyway.

I shipped a G08 from Grinkers to myself in McKinney TX so I could further test it and fix it correctly. I packaged it in its first box with plenty of styro foam to protect it. I brought that box to a UPS store to have them put it into another box (which they did) but it still got destroyed.

I ended up with a tube so I got the monitor put back together and working but now I have to ship it back. Its again double boxed surrounded by stryo foam and shipping blankets. I've also marked the box fragile, added arrows pointing up and wrote on the box "do not stack anything on top."

I dont know if this thing is going to make it. :(

I wonder what NAVL would charge to ship it? :)

All that said, I've purchased hundreds of single boxed 19's form Happ BITD. None of them were damaged beyond use as far as I can remember. One of them fell down a flight of concrete stairs and survived.
