I was taking my kids bowling at a small local bowling alley and I was talking to the owner about my arcade game collection. He asked me if I could help him with some cap kits for a few monitors that were not working well for him, until he could afford to buy new scoring equipment. He had just bought this small alley, and was slowly renovating and making it a nice place to bowl. I told him I'd look around to see what I could on his monitors and let him know what I could do. I wanted to help this guy out because he's a pretty good guy and the kids from school really like him.

Anyway, as I was trying to find out what monitor this was to get a cap kit for it, I couldn't find anything! I was wonder if any of you have seen these before and could point me out to a model number or more info. I found the info on the tube, but not the chassis. I've attached a few pics and tried to show any markings I could. I want to try to order some cap kits for these and not sure where to start looking.

Thanks!

Hrmm...that tag on the tube says "VDC" - which is probably Video Display corp. Its possible they just made the tube. Its probably a Motorola. The model number (actually the chassis number) is very simliar to the Electrohome/Motorola numbering (16VP102), so its prob a 16" b/w (good luck finding those tubes). In addition, you can just make out ...a Display...on the ripped part of the tag, which kinda Jives with Motorola. See if he can pull another one..that should verify that.

Only about 12 caps on there, give or take a couple. I'd just make a list, hit up digikey and have at it. I doubt you'll find a cap kit for that monitor but its possible. The only PITA one is the large can capacitor - it may have multiple caps inside, just read it to see what values they are. That might not have to be replaced unless its wavy anyway.

Last but not least, if this is in say, a Brunswick console at the start of the alley, he could probably call up Brunswick to get a manual for it.

What are they doing?

PS - whats it says on the little white tag on the pcb?

You'd spend more time trying to find a premade cap kit than you would simply reading the caps and buying replacements. If all the monitors are the same, stock up by buying at price break quantities. Fixing these old black and white monitors is really easy, I fix stuff like this for the vintage computers fairly frequently. Almost all the components are pretty standard and easy to find replacements for, even stuff like deflection transistors.

And of course, you can replace the can cap with individual values, no need to find the exact can cap.

But... if anyone is going to have a kit, it would probably be Zanen.

Looks very similar to a Motorola monitor I have at home. I'll have to check the model number when I get home. It came from a pong clone.

Motorola XM-500 series. That Video Display Corp sticker indicates the picture tube has been replaced recently.

Use these two manuals in conjunction with each other:

http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/Motorola_XM_Series_Technical_Repair_Manual.pdf

http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Moni...19in) and XM701-10 (23in) Service Manual.pdf

The XM501 was a more 'open' and easier to work on monitor than the XM500. They are both the same circuitry.

Bob Roberts capkit for the Motorola XM501/701 will be what you want.

This thread from right here should help:

Ken,

You are the man! Thank you very much. This will be much easier for me than trying to build my own kits. The pics in that thread are very similar to what we're seeing with their score monitors. This will be a huge help!

Thanks!

The cap kits for the Motorola worked out great. Got one more question for you guys. The monitors also contained fuses that I pictured here. What are these called, and how do I go about getting new ones? Anyone seen them before and know what they are? If they are no longer available any idea on newer substitute parts?
