Ok, Ive had a few threads going about a machine I bought yesterday.
lemme ask this.
When it comes to testing, I should have tested outside with ext cord, but didn't.
So I have my Midway Omega Race in my room.
Suggestions when testing? Fire ext on hand?
power strip with shut off switch.
check connections PRE plugging in.
any other tips advice tricks?
I wanna be UBER SAFE. I like my house un-crispy ;)
And no not being paranoid. would rather just know any advice from you guys..

Just plug it in an see what happens if anything and start testing voltages. You're not going to burn your house down no matter what is wrong with it. At the most you will flip a breaker and you would have to have a shorted power cord or something for that to happen.

I would at least take the back door off and look around inside before plugging it in to make sure you don't have a rats nest inside or anything dead inside it. Check for loose or bear wires that might short out. If it looks ok plug it in wile looking in the back. If no snap crackle pop you should be ok. If it appears dead look at the neck of the tube for neck glow. If it doesn't fire up ,unplug, check for blown fuses, if none get the volt meter out and check the power supply for all voltages, reseat all connectors and plugs etc. just for a start.

You can unplug the monitor and fire it up, see it if it plays blind, keep an eye on things, check the voltages to the motherboard etc, if everything seems ok then plug in the monitor and fire it up again.

It's an Omega Race. It's going to be dead as a doornail because of battery acid corrosion on the boards. :D

Take the back off and look for obvious faults. Plug it in and check voltages. The chance of starting a fire is slim to nil. Smoke, possibly - but if something smokes, just shut it off - and replace whatever is burned :)

Wasnt there a thread recently where the anode was completely off the tube? Check that!

HA!!! That would have been my post "First non-working game". Pole Position

Even though the anode was off, and even if I would have powered it on, nothing would have happened.

Because......IT'S A COMPLETE PILE OF SHIT!!!

Well, uncomplete pile of shit. But it's still mine...

It can never hurt to have a fire extinguisher on hand. I mean 99999 times out of 100000 you won't need it, but why not? You can do a power strip for an added breaker in the line and the quick shut-off but I wouldn't use a cheapie. Those things can be pretty crap and on something untested could cause more damage than good. I know I've personally cooked one or two of those strips. Maybe if you've got one of those nice ones with a guarentee on it, then you can blame APC or whoever if your machine smokes and it manages to blow up the strip.
