I just bought a WG6100 to replace my WG in my Star Wars that exploded last week. The new one I bought came out of a Major Havoc. I noticed that the deflection board had a piggy back pcb on the top 1/3 of the pcb. I think it is a Atari recommended mod named TM-268. Anybody heard of that?

My old WG6100 had no such animal attached. I read that Atari recommended this mod for major havok and some others, but did not list SW. Does this mean it should be discarded for use in my SW, or perhaps I should use my old WG6100 non-modded deflection pcb with the new monitor?

Any ideas?

If the monitor is working, I would leave that piggyback board alone. I have run across a few of these on WG6100 monitors. It should work fine on Star Wars. From what I have heard, it is just there to offer some input protection for the deflection circuitry.

What happened to your original monitor that required you to buy an entire replacement monitor? The 6100 is a pretty user friendly monitor to work on, and I haven't found myself in need of a spare.

look under post "I killed my Star Wars"

I blew up the tube for some unknown reason. I have the deflection board from the old blow tube that I fitted with a LV2000. Should I use that board or the modded one explained prior. I am not sure which one is better.

It literally exploded!

Learpilot, the chassis / yoke / frame still has a lot of value if you don't want to keep them as replacement parts. You can probably get half or more of the money you spent on the new monitor back if you decide to sell the parts.

That "piggyback" board is called an Input Protection Circuit (IPC). These were released for the P318 versions of the 6100 deflection boards as an aftermarket "extra-protection" add-on.

You can read about it on page 43:

Some people take them off and some people leave them on. If it works with it, might as well leave it alone....

which one is better....

Which defelection board should i use. The piggy back one with input protection that works great, or try the deflection board that I recapped and installed a lv2000? Keep in mind that was the lv2000 deflection board which first power up = tube explosion on the last monitor. Sounds like you said they were not related though. I hate to mess with something that works, but if the lv2000 modded deflection board is better, I guess it makes sense to swap it.

thanks

It probably won't hurt either way, but you also probably don't need to swap them for use in a Star Wars. Of course, if you're REALLY worried, you could just take the LV2000 off the other one and install it onto this one.

Now, if it was in a Tempest, I'd definitely recommend the LV2000. Tempest puts a lot more strain on the monitor's LV section...
