Hey guys, My boss at work has a bunch of money that he wants to do something with as a investment/hobby. He wants to find a container of pins from overseas or a old operator and have a hobby of fixing them up and selling them. (He likes to work on stuff like this) Anyone know where to begin looking for something like that for him.

He's going to need a time machine first. I don't think those "foreign container deals" are happening much any more.

You got one ;) Need the exchange rate to go in our favor again!

There are still containers that you can buy, but I've heard nothing but horror stories from people who have done it in the past 4-5 years. 10 years ago it was a great idea, these days you rarely make your money back. A guy in Idaho did a container buy about a year ago and out of the 32 pins he bought, only 2 were in working order when he opened them up. He ended up having to cannibalize many of them to get a few working to 100% and then he sold off the rest as non-working or incomplete as an attempt to get his head above water. I think he ended up losing a few thousand on the deal when it was all said and done.

I wish I was more into pinball back in the days when the good containers were coming over. Really missed the boat on that one. har-dee-har-har.

I have a feeling that in another 10 years we are going to be lamenting today, when there are still some machines that come off routes. I'm glad I got in the hobby now when there are still some treasures to be found. Not that I wouldn't still think this hobby was great if that wasn't the case, but it is kind of cool to find them.

The pinball bargain bin is over and done with. If you want to get ahead of the curve, start collecting Nintendo, xBox and Playstation crap right now. Better yet, pick up a few Toyota Celicas. They don't make them any more and they're going to be worth big bucks in the future.

What price range would you consider "bargain bin"?

People brag about how they got MMs for a several hundred dollars back then. These days I think it's more likely that Europeans will import containers of pinballs from America than the other way around. The best deals are likely to be found off CL in individual sales IMO.

Give me your bosses address and I'll hold my pockets open as he crumbles up the money and tries shotting it like a basketball into my pocket.

The container is a terrible idea UNLESS he wants to fly over and inspect them first. I've seen numerous photos of pins that are rusted up EVERY WHERE. That salt water air is just plain ass brutal.

seems like the Portugese are trying to sell containers full of pinballs. a friend and i looked into it and even tried calling whoever it was in Portugal that barely spoke english. seemed like the thing to do was to fly there and deal with it.
talked to another bud here in Kansas City who had imported a container years ago and said the pinballs get slightly moldy being near the water for so long. plus they are used and some dont work so dont be expecting wonderful outcomes. we passed on the idea. now we are thinking of exporting games to Australia. have you seen those prices ? OMG !

tnt amusements has bulk deals for pins and vids. they have some listed on ebay. you could email them.
