So I just bought a Pole Position 2 which I love, and the first thing I did was set the dip switches for no attract mode sounds. But it still plays that boop boop boop BAAA sound all the time. Is there any way to disable that, or is slowly going insane from that sound just considered part of Pole Position ownership?

I knew exactly what you were talking about by your title. If I could get a Pole and have it 100% reliable, I believe that I would put up with that sound.

For some reason I thought this would be about asteroids...

I hear those PP sounds in the background of most John's Arcade videos, it's annoying!

This might be a stupid question but did you flip the correct dip switch?

DIP 2 9JA OR 7E
--------------- ..................123456.......dip 7..................8
....................................................dip 7 OFF = ATTRACT SOUND ON
....................................................DIP 7 ON = ATTRACT SOUND OFF

Do you have it on free play?

No I have it on coin mode. In free play it unfortunately will automatically start a game over and over again, so I set it to coin mode and added a "add coin" button on the coin door.

Yeah that's what I set. It mostly works, attract mode is all silent except for that boop boop countdown it does at the start.

Haha yeah I always wondered about that! I kept wondering why he didn't turn off attract sounds but now I'm starting to think that boop boop can't be silenced, hence why it's in every single John's Arcade video lol.

well, a cheap work around is to insert an on off switch / button in series with one of the speaker inputs so it will literally turn off the sound when you're not playing it. When you want to play just hit the button and it will connect the speaker. You can just put it on your coin door or have it hanging out the coin return slot if you don't want to drill a hole.

That's an interesting idea, although I think at that point I may as well just turn the cabinet off if it gets annoying. One good thing about the Pole Position cabinet is the power switch is at the top so it's easily accessible even when it's in a row of games. So I'll just do that, power it off when it grates on me. No idea why they ignored that sound when the dip switch settings asks for silence, but I guess it is what it is. I thought I was missing something but looks like it's just a quirk of the machine.

Come on now! That's one of the sounds I live in my arcade! When my PP is down and the sound is missing it's like the arcade isn't alive anymore. Now that I added a PP2 its double the fun!

You are a much stronger man than me!

Your switch is on top? Mine is down bottom... About 7 inches bell the power cord.

Yeah mine is at the top right, see the attached pic. Maybe the last owner modded it to be that way, not sure. It's actually a super convenient location, I wish all games were like that.

You just gotta deal with it, man... I don't think you can turn it off. I believe there's an explosion sound every once in awhile too like that. It's something like if the car in the attract mode explodes right when it is switching to the next screen, you hear the explosion.

I don't think you can easily put a switch on the sound, either, because it's got two speakers and two sets of sound outputs from the board.

It was designed like that, enjoy it!

The rom could be hacked to remove this sound. Not sure how time consuming that would be to remove it though. You would not want to remove the sounds altogether, but the pointers to the sounds during attract mode. Depending on how they are implemented it may not be a trivial task.

Interesting. As I said, mine is a bit below the power cord:

Maybe yours was modified, or maybe it was a later s/n? You're right, though.... power switches in convenient locations are pretty nice.

My s/n is: UR17776

Yeah looks like mine was modded. Took a pic of the back and you can see the original hole for the power switch.
