Bob Roberts Quick Order Tool Alpha

Ok cool

Andrew

QUOTE=dethfactor;1670027]No connector page yet. I have to manually scrape/rebuild all the pages with my code. Will get around to it in time.[/QUOTE]

Another update!

Added the ability to add the contents of the cart to the clipboard so it can be pasted into your email client! W00t!

That is a super great idea. I actually didn't order from him because the whole process seemed a little laborious.

Great job. I'll check it out next time I need something.

No offense, but if ordering from Bob Roberts is too much work, then you probably don't have the required patience to be repairing arcade machines... :D

Honestly, I really do like the existing method of ordering from Bob. I find it to be incredibly easy - just cut and paste and email. Also, finding things on Bob's site is a hell of a lot easier than dealing with some of the search engines on parts websites. Jameco, I'm looking at you...

I'm not saying the "order tool" is bad - I'm just saying I don't see the problem with the existing order method. Cut. Paste. Email. Easy.

I like sending the email myself because I like to say things like thanks for the moon pies and stuff like that. It just is more personal.

The tool doesn't send the email for you. I also email bob messages with my order. It generates your shopping list for you. Copying/Pasting HTML tables in modern browsers can be tedious and time consuming. and wading through that giant table can get confusing so I rebuilt the navigation. It's not for everyone and it's mainly for myself. I just decided to share it with everyone else figuring it might get bob a few more orders.
No biggie.

I think your tool is very useful, sorry I made you think otherwise. Most of the times when I order I only order one item at a time, cap kit, etc. So I haven't had need for it yet. :D

You guys are old school. I'm just not big on emailing orders in.

I'm actually a purchasing guy for a living, but for consumer oriented stuff, I prefer a form I can just fill in and get on with it.

Don't even get me going on calling orders in.

You forgot the first step. Search. Cut. Paste. Email. Hard...lol

If you like scrolling through pages upon pages of items, then his existing system is golden.

Control F.

Why yes, pressing those two keys is very hard. Especially since you have to hold one down while you press the other. I don't know how I ever managed.

:D

Two buttons? You're not using a scroll wheel? Jeez, Are you still using Windows '95? :)

I like to browse after I get the things I need, but scrolling through pages of links sucks. Don't get me wrong Bob Roberts is a great asset to this community. However, like I have said before, it wouldn't be bad thing, for us as buyers, to have a more user friendly site.

Another update, which was a bitch to get in for such a small feature but it's laying groundwork for more features.

The system now does 2 more things!
It generates a unique order id for your order, so you/bob have something to reference besides the subject of your email and it's now storing orders so that one day re-ordering/editing/etc can take place. Plus, it lets me discern information about the site such as whats the most ordered item, what's the total amount in parts purchased, etc. Just thought it'd be neat to quantify things.

Keep suggestions coming and may the farce be with you.

I perused your work and it looks good.

The biggest problem I've had over the last week are the lack of links between some of Bob's tutorials/documentation and the parts involved for sale. They are not 100% complete.

For instance I stumbled across a link that appears to suggest that Bob has an Atari Asteroids PCB cap kit: http://therealbobroberts.net/asteroids.jpg

But I can find no such thing on his parts page.

Also, I noticed that he doesn't have 100Vuf 35V capacitors on his parts page, six which I need for a couple of Millipede game boards. Since I know he sometimes recommends substitutions for various parts, that may be the reason he doesn't carry them. But if he has a tutorial on this there would be no way to make that connection unless I happen to stumble upon that tutorial. (I've definitely not seen any Millipede game board cap kits).

Nevertheless, this is not really the area you are working on.

Bumping this to see if this tool is still working correctly. Anyone use it lately?

I've never used it, nor have I ever even ordered from Bob, but I recommended Bob and this quick order tool to someone on another site and they reported back:

"Have you ever ordered anything from there? The orderfrombob website wont even let me checkout, so I don't think I know what I'm doing."

Just curious...

You don't check out at the orderfrombob website. It's simply a scripting tool to make it easier to find items, and add them to a cart.

When you're done shopping, you can either use the site to launch your default email client and pull up a message to Bob, or copy the contents of your shopping cart to the clipboard for pasting into an email to Bob.

You still have to check out with Bob via the normal methods - email, confirm order, send payment.

Okay, thanks. Forwarded this info on.

i build data bases for a living and in my opinion your site is not user-friendly at all.

why not use paypal for a method of payment. i understand if you dont want to pay the fees but my guess is that your loosing customers without this option.

i had a tough time trying to figure out your email addy since my email was not set up to accept your client.

you need to establish a seach bar so one can search your site instead of scrolling though countless lists of items.

i was and still confused everytime i visit your site.

just giving you my feedback no hard feelings.

This was an idea that has yet to be implemented correctly. It is still in its infancy. If you feel you can improve on it, or build a better quick order tool for bob's site, than by all means do so...
