So I started working on a friend's Amplifone tonight. I open up one of the Amp cap-kits I still have around from good old Bob (yes he IS a great guy!) and start working.
When I come to C24 I need a 33uF cap. But it's not in the kit. And no close value either.
This is the third time that I run into a wrong or missing cap in one of his kits. I know Bob would make good, but the fact is that it will take time and hassle.

Apart from wether the Chinese caps are good quality or not, the _reason_ why one orders cap-kits is the ease of having to order one item, stock them and once you start working you know you've got the right values at hand.

Well this was the last time for me. I will definitely be still ordering stuff from him but not the cap-kits anymore.

I'd love to see some guys start selling HQ kits with 105 degr. caps and well known brands like Nichicon or Panasonic.

i bought i a bunch of caps from mouser, will keep me stocked for a long time. i used the lists of previous cap kits.

Must be luck of the draw... I've not come across a single kit missing a single cap (aside from a single D9200 cap that he wrote was missing on the sheet saying he could not source it).

I Have done 45+ cap kits over the last 8 years or so and have never had that problem from Bob. Maybe his grandson is slacking.

I don't ever recall getting wrong or missing caps from Bob, however, I have in a few instances in the last few jobs I've done noticed that I get caps where there's like barely any legs left lol. like they were cut off already.

I'm fortunate that I didn't have to resort to any strange hacks to install them. FWIW though, I get a majority of my newer style monitor kits from Happ (since I actually order a lot of parts for our game room from them, I'm not exclusively a collector working out of a basement or garage)

unrelated, but he had a particular model Neotec monitor listed under his general Neo cap kit that is not even close. I e-mailed him about this and I was told I have some chinese knockoff, when I don't. Zanen lists the proper kit, but Bob doesn't have the values to do it right. I believe it's the 3501, whatever comes with the deluxe Cruis'n Exotica.

Not 100% sure, but years back the cap kits were never complete anyways. He'd always just include the frequent failure items and low-ohm caps IIRC. But I thought nowadays he did them all (minus the filter caps)?

I usually just pull the chassis, mark down exactly what I need, and order from Mouser now though anyways. In fact if you do some Googling you can find Mouser 'projects' for many monitors so as to make a instant order (hi temp to boot in many cases!). Only problem there is are the guys making these project files getting them 100% accurate?

Oh well... Bob is still the man in my book, but like I said I don't order cap kits from there anymore anyways.

On a related note, my last order from Bob included a misship. I ordered a V2000 cap kit with transistors, and instead I received the V2000 pot kit. Simple mistake, and yes, he corrected it in 3 business days with free shipping, but it was an annoyance. I had to wait a bit longer for my stuff.

Bob's still my man for some hard to find parts.

Carry on....

Never had an issue with any of Bobs cap kits. I do like ordering around Mardi gras..get those free beads and moonpies. ;)

Again not bashing up Bob here, its just the final push to make me get the caps elsewhere.
Seems I've been pretty unlucky with my kits, Still got a coupl on stock for future projects, hope they are complete...

I will stay customer for other stuff.

Guess I'm a lucky one...I've ordered at least 2 dozen cap kits from him in the last couple month and all were fine.

What I do notice is a lot of substitution...I have found that I've substituted a close value cap and not used the correct one...looking like a cap was missing or having an extra odd ball.

Now I lay them all out lining them up with the cap map and make sure I have the proper substitutions before I start. I've caught many of my own 'mistakes' this way..which might have looked like missing caps

seems i always run into variants and stuff , whats in the kit isnt perfct becaus emy monitor will hav some oddballs in it..

thats why i ordered a cap assortment from bob, put them in 2 plastic organizers, stockd up on more of the common ones, now i just have em all when i need em. When i get low, i reorder.

Sorry to hear about the missing part. Can be a pain if you don't live close to a electronics shop :(

Never had any probs myself, except for the ordering process :D

Bob's still good in my books

I've ordered from Zanen and have had a cap missing. I ordered from him again and told him one was missing and he added the cap to the next order. Shit happens. No biggie.

I have little drawers full of caps from cap kits I have robbed and loose caps I have purchased over the years. Yet, I still find that I am missing an elusive cap sometimes. I suggest buying one of the assortments that Ken has pointed out in the past or order a few extra kits just to have spares on hand.

love bob but every one of bob's capkits are incomplete IMO
the big cap is missing

so what do i do ?
i have a quadrillion bags with all different values of caps
that way, i can do almost any monitor that comes in
