My monitor is blurry on the edges. It looks OK in the center, could be better.

Is this a problem with the CRT or the chassis?

What are symptoms of a bad flyback?

Thanks.

not seeing the picture my guess would be poor convergence....which is typical of most factory aligned picture tubes. Your flyback is producing a picture and is probably fine.

I've seen failing flybacks produce blurry/shitty convergence on the edges.

just saying.

So basically, play with the convergence rings first and if no improvement replace the flyback?

Before playing with the convergence rings, mark a straight line across them with a paint marker. That way you can get back to your starting point when things go wrong. Don't ask me how i know.

This is the dumb question of the day:

If I use a paint marker to mark the current ring location, what do I do if I move the rings and find a better position - what do I do with the old useless locations?

Whenever I have seen the recommendation to mark the location, I have always wondered this.

And it's not a dumb question. I suppose you could mark them with white and then cover the old ones with black or something. What model is your monitor? What game is it on? Some have test screens or a collapse mode that can help with getting them lined up.

It's a Neo Geo. It does have a test screen (grid).

Probably should have said this earlier, but the corners of the test screen (if I goto max size) are bent/warped/slanted. If I shrink the vert/hori so the grid is smaller and away from the corners then the bends/warps go away and it is a square.

dicking with the convergence rings won't help. especially if it looks fine in the middle. those "CRT magnetic strips" you find in the for sale section all the time are what fine tune the convergence in the corners. if you're missing those on your tube, that will cause you some problems.

I will repeat myself, if the flyback is old, it will also cause poor convergence or blurring on the edges. if you notice your brightness or focus walking at all, it's definitely the flyback at fault.

Thanks, I am now looking for 'yoke tabs' aka 'crt magnetic strips'

Unfortunately getting a new flyback won't be easy because no has been able to ID it or the chassis yet. I had to manually cap kit it by getting parts from Digi-Key.

Did you look through the Bob Roberts monitor ID?
http://www.therealbobroberts.net/monitor.html

Yes. And Chad's site. And some other site from a repair guy in Australia. Also have posted it here several times.

It's a Korean/Kortek "A-One". Closest I could find as a match is a first generation Sharp Image. I haven't looked at those yet, maybe those flybacks match.

Will try playing with magnetic strips first, *IF* I can find any.
