Alright guys, got an Area 51, upon start up the game looks awesome. After about 15 mins it turns to this bright and blurry mess. I know a few people will say what kind of monitor is it, but I don't remember, I can update that later because I have to go down and look. I have a cap kit for it, but have yet to put it in. Principles are the same, what do you think? Flyback? Adjustment? The fact that it looks good at first throws me off.

Any input or help would be great

Depending on the chassis type it could be a few different things, so find that out first.

While doing that, pull the neckboard and make sure the focus pin isn't bent or broken...

In the case of my neotec monitor it was the flyback. A cap kit was done first and did not help. I did also change a couple caps with higher temp rated ones.

modessitt knows a lot more than I do but for what it's worth my Centipede's K7000 was doing the exact same thing and it was a failing flyback. Replaced it with a new one from arcadecup.com and all was well. I did cap the chassis while I had it out of the cab, though.

You can add me to the list of folks who had this same symptom, and it was indeed the flyback. Chad at arcadecup hooked me up w/ a new one, and all was well.

Ever wonder what that hot glue is doing on the pots of thje flyback? What is happening is your fly is warming up, and those pots are turning ever so slowly as the sucker heats up.
Your flyback is worn out.

My suggestion is to let it warm up, make your adjustments, then lock them down using a hot glue gun.

hot glue doesent do jack. You should not need to glue the flyback knobs. That was put there so the knob(s) wouldnt get moved during transport to the game manufactured, assembley, and transpost out to location.

Look over the flyback for cracks. see any? its going for sure and REPLACE IT NOW not later. If it totally shats itself, youll be replacing alot more than just the flyback.

This is incorrect. I have a bad fly here in my failed parts bin that goes in and out of focus, and I can assure you the focus knob isn't moving back and forth. As Caddy stated, the glue is there to keep the adjustments from getting moved when new.

Bad flyback...
What happens is there is stray voltage internally between the Screen pot and the Focus pot.
Notice how the image is out of focus AND has retrace lines like the Screen is too high.

This is very typical of the white knob flybacks in K7000's. Those cracks some people see on the outside of the flyback near the two adjustment pots go clean into and around the pots allowing the voltage to go where it wants to between the pots. As it warms up, the cracks open up, and bzzzt...HV goes where it wants to making any previous adjustment null and void.

This is a very old thread, apologies for digging it up but it helped me. My Star Wars vector monitor was fine on start-up, then would go blurry after 10 minutes with no focus adjustment working on the flyback. After trying everything, I inspected my neckboard and the focus pin was loose. It's all good now! Thanks modessitt.

I would call it the same issue I was having, just a different cause.

I searched the problem I was having, which was exactly the same symptoms fireman was having and it lead me to this thread. The first to comment was modessitt with a suggestion that helped me with my problem. I wanted to make note of it in case anyone else had the same problem. Just saying. I'm damn glad it's working too! Cheers.
