Blitz monitor with possible convergence problems -- what to do??

I scored a couple of NFL Blitz machines in an auction the other day. one has a WG U5000 with a dim picture and needs a cap kit (incidentally just like the other U5000 I bought last week!) and my Blitz 99 machine, uh, well..... the monitor has quite a few ailments.

judging by the chassis tray saying "REPLACE WITH K7500 CHASSIS ONLY" I'm going to assume it's a K7500. it needs caps, but when I throw up the White Screen, the entire screen is red.

it's also got a cool double vision effect that would work very well with those old school blue and red 3D glasses. :)

I've never mucked with convergence or purity before. I have hardly any money in it, so I figure it's worth a shot to learn how to fix it myself.

I tried dialing the RGB drivers up and down to see what it would do. turning red down/off gives me a blue screen, so I'm inclined to believe the red convergence is what's out of whack.

this tube's pretty shot too, real weak. I reckon if I can adjust it right though that a rejuve might help.

EDIT: I'm not a genius. I forget if I turned Green down/off when I did the Red -- screen should've been yellow if green and blue were on, yes?

Don;t assume anything. Identify the chassis first.
Your dim issue could simply be the settings are all jacked up. You have no idea what the prior owner turned/played with.

I had a gray screen on a K7000. It was a combination of brightness on the flyback, the contrast and black setting on the remote board. Not familiar with the 5000 model but you might not even need to cap that thing. Try the easiest road first.

this K7500 is worse than I thought.

tube's probably just shot. I'll see if there's some bent pins on the neck connector or something else stupid.

turning the color drivers/biases all the way down yielded no change. the whole screen either has a tint of red, or if you go in the Blue Screen test, it'll turn it to a tint of blue, and it'll stay that way on the Monitor Diagnostic menu.

sounds like there's a miscommunication between the neck and the tube somewhere!

focus won't adjust worth shit either. any possibility it's the flyback?

forget this one gents, this monitor's just junk.

if a mod sees this, please delete it.

i gotts go look... i either have a 7400 or 7500 monitor, no chassis..

id be interested in buying your chassis and yoke.... LMK!!

been awhile, but I have updates :)

I was able to get the monitor to where you can at least look at it.

the full red tint problem was caused by the contrast being CRANKED. the brightness pot had no effect, so whoever had the game before also had the screen setting CRANKED.

there's still a red bias in the white, and that's even with the red driver and red cutoff pots dialed down ... lots of things I've heard about the U5000/K7500 is that the color guns short, but it's not to the point where you can't see the green and blue just fine -- it's just the white balance still has a reddish tint in it.

if I turn the green and blue up even slightly higher, it smears.

I fixed the brightness issue by re-capping the monitor. :)

I had some wave effects and it looked like the sync went batshit crazy, I think I was able to fix this by turning the H-Hold pot on the chassis blindly (I ever mention how much it sucks working on monitors with no help?) ... is there like a little break-in period for caps? cause it doesn't wave or do anything unusual like that anymore.

more to come!

LOL

I did say that didn't I? yeah, forgot to mention the part where I hoisted the damn thing back into the cab by myself. never again will I do that. especially given that I had a pulled ab this season.

really need to get my Polo chassis out to uncle Chad sometime this year... did you just need the chassis for a 7500 or would you go for the whole thing? need to rejuve my 5000s and possibly this thing first. if the tube blows on it, I'll donate the chassis to science for you. :)

just a somewhat unnecessary bump...

apparently I had a cap bulge, had a friend come by with his rejuvenator to fix the problems with the red and green and he found that. when I get time to mess with it again I'll probably just recap it, for some weird reason I had 2 caps leftover from my Happ kit that weren't even the correct ratings for where they were supposed to be so I didn't install them.

but the long and short of it, is the rejuve fixed the CRT problems, this monitor looks 5x better than my other Blitz with a U5000.

so, sorry cadillacman, no K7500 chassis for you after all. :)
