I have an original Joust cocktail power supply plate. It was heavily rusted with traditional red rust. I took a wire brush to it and removed all the rust, or so I thought.

I oiled the plate and some of the rust came back in the form of black rust. This happens when the rust appears without oxygen exposure (most likely due to the oil covering).

I know black rust is slower to grow, but does anyone have any suggestions on going forward? Should I just use my replica? Should I wire brush it again? Should I just ignore it?

I have a lot of experience with heavily pitted parts (some of which are 100 years old and have been shot with thousands of projectiles, etc).

My advice would be to use Evaporust or Electrolysis, then wire brush/wire wheel to make sure to get everything, dry immediately, and then immediately spray liberally with WD-40. Then wipe it off 15 minutes later.

Sometimes I use a large wire wheel I attach to my drill. I have different hardness wheels (steel, brass) for different jobs.

Yes. Boeshield or Crown 6007.

Or.....wax that puppy! It will last a long time. A lot of hand and power tools are traditionally protected like this.
Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.

With any of these solutions, you'll need to reapply periodically. But with a mounting plate that doesn't see any friction in normal use that could be a VERY long time.

Another option I often use is to just polish the part using Flitz after de-rusting.

It will look a lot nicer (even with pitting) and the flitz leaves a protective coating behind.
