I have the opportunity to pick up a Black Rose locally. I've never played it, but wanted to know your thoughts. Some reviews I've seen are not too favorable. What do you think of the video modes? What is a good price, both shopped or unshopped?

It is an awesome game for those who aren't into pins - but not a game a 'collector' would probably own.

It looks great, has some great sound and the idea of the cannon is awesome.

The cons are - it doesn't have deep rules, if you are any good you will rack up large scores in no time, and the cannon can be problematic and a headache when out of adjustment.

I've seen them go anywhere from 900-1300 depending on condition. Your average person tends to love them. (who doesn't like pirates!?)

I picked mine up for 1400CAN, (everything is more expensive up here, especially in BC) no fade, playfield in really good shape, and needed a little bit of tweaking. I've since got it running almost to my liking (waiting for a few parts from BAA to come in) and I love the game. A lot of the complaints you hear about the game (search BR on RGP and you'll find a few 'worst game EVAR' threads) come from the cannon, which I think is a really cool toy, provided it's setup correctly. Also read that people think the music is annoying, I think it's one it's best features, with about 5 different songs that it'll play depending on the scenario, all of which are catchy IMO. Pirate theme = sweet, for a relatively inexpensive game I think it's a great pickup.

*edit* Video modes are kinda lame actually, but quick and don't disrupt the continuity of the game.

The bowling alley near my work used to have one. I played it a couple of times and would add it to my collection if one ever showed up at a good price.

What has been anyones experience in selling one? Its being offered low enough that I think I can take a chance on it. I'm hoping that if it turns out to be a dud in my collection, that I could get rid of it fairly quickly and at least break even if not come out ahead on the deal. I'd hate to get it and then find out it is going to sit in my garage until I can find the right buyer. You can see my collection in my signature, I so realize it won't have the staying power of those, I just want something a little different to switch things up.

Your other machines are Pinball Party and BK? BK2K? I think BR is a better game than BK, personally.

I played it for a while once and it wasn't bad at all. The backglass artwork is cheesey but overall I thought it was a fun player. Pirates theme does seem well liked, too.

Heh, I don't mind the backglass, except that Black Rose looks like a dude with boobs.
