Anyone running the standard bulb sized fluorescent black lights in recessed fixtures?
My gameroom ceiling clearance is only 7 1/2 feet, and I think these would help in maximizing the look and clearance. I'm worried they won't be bright enough to really light the carpet though.

Here is an example of the kind I'm talking about, not necessarily this exact bulb.

I've been wondering this as well. Almost picked a few up the other day, but had the same concerns as you.

I was looking at these as well. That is the only color my local home depot didn't have lit up. I want to use those in vapor tight fixtures for an industrial look.

They're not very bright at all, but if you have a bunch of games going at once, the screens should add enough light to see a little. I've used the cfl blacklights for Halloween parties and such. Be aware that they get a little hotter than standard cfl bulbs as well.

I have one in the corner of my gameroom but not in a recessed fixture. it really doesn't emit much light at all honestly but maybe with enough in the room it would work ok

I had 12 of those cfl blacklights going in my basement and they suck. Blacklight.com has led floodlights that are suppose to put off a butt load of black. I'm planning on getting them for replacements but the most powerful ones are currently out of stock.

I have 3 in vapor proof fixtures. If I remember right they are 20w. The put out enough light when I only had 5 games but after that the black light effect was not enough. I had to supplement it with two 4' shop light fixtures with 4' black light bulbs. After that the room just popped I keep the vapor fixtures just for looks but the bulk of the work is done with the 4' fixtures.

Also a note about the vapor fixtures. Don't use the glass as the bulbs get REALLY hot and I think they destroy the electronic ballast. I had to replace a couple before I decided to keep the glass off.

Here is a pic of when I had some work friends over. You can see the fixture without the glass in the center

They work well behind my Galaxian Marquee:

But I wouldn't trust them to light up an entire room of BL Carpet.

Damn. I was hoping to get away with running 6 to 8 of these in a 12x25' room, but clearly that isn't going to work.

Maybe I can find some tube fixtures that I can flushmount... The thing I have going for me here is that there is an attic space above this room, so clearance above isn't an issue.

blacklight LED's are amazing. look awesome and throw a ton of blacklight.i have 3 of the biggest ones in a 12x25 and its enough blacklight for sure. you put 6 in a room that size and your eyes will melt out of their sockets a la indiana jones and the lost ark.

Is this the type you're referring to?

I'm all over the place on this right now. I've looked at recessed tube fixtures and also the stage style LED lights on the musician/DJ sites.

The stage style one would be good if I could 2 of them in corners of the game room ceiling kind of pointed at the other end. I wonder about uneven lighting with that. The nice thing about these setups is that I could have it up and running very quickly compared to cutting the holes for recessed fluorescent tube fixtures.

Yes that is one type, they carry two stronger ones above that one. They can also be used in can lights.

I tried using six of the 20 watt black light bulbs with the recessed cans in a 25 x 16 room. The monitor screens turn green, but not near enough for the skating rink effect I was looking for. Now I use them to find cat piss stains. Maybe I'll try the 4' tubes along the corners of the ceiling next time. Out of the way and alot more light.

OK, wife saw me looking at this stuff and told me whatever I wanted is going to be my fathers day present. Think two of these would be enough for a 12x25' room?
I'm hoping to put them at opposite corners on one of the 12' walls and point to two separate parts of the room... One near, one far.

IMO that looks expensive because it has alot of useless features that you don't sound like you'd need. Noise activation, strobe, etc. I don't know about power, but that one has 151 LED's for 100$, and the other bulb that's out of stock has 120 for 27$. Maybe those 30 or so extra LED's pick up the other 70$. It does have the advantage of coming with a full mounting system, but if you we're talking about recessed fixtures than I assume you already have those in place. I would just get several of the lower-end LED blacklights to put in there. Having a few of them would probably give you the same if not better results.

I would think that having several spaced out would give a more even lighting enviroment than two 'spotlights'.

No recessed fixtures for the black lights in place yet... I have two standard recessed fixtures in place for regular lights, black lights will be separate fixtures and switch.

Ease of mounting makes these an appealing option. Price isn't really an issue for 2 of these. Three would be where it started making other options look better.
I was figuring on spending roughly as much on fluorescent tube fixtures and bulbs.

The fact that these may be more of a beam style spotlight is the main concern.

I put two switches in the room, one 'dimmable' for the regular lights and then one non dimmable for the recessed LED blacklights. 3 of the biggest LEDs in my 12x25 works well

Its this style that you got? The kind that fits a standard recessed fixture?

Thanks for all the help/opinions from everyone by the way. Once you get on the musician/DJ sites its easy to get overwhelmed with options!

Kind of just a follow up on my own thread... I ended up ordering one of these, supposedly covers a 20' square area. My gameroom is 12x21', actual carpet space will probably be 16 feet with stuff around the walls.

This is a really quick and easy solution for me, and I can mount it to the area behind and clear of the the door so you're not looking at it as you enter the room.

I'll report on how it works if anyone is curious, but it might be a few weeks before the carpet is down.
