Looking for black laminate. Similar to what is found on the sides of a dragon's lair or at a coin box location. Anyone know who carries this?

Search for a local kitchen cabinet shop in your area. When i buy Matte black i just buy the house brand laminate which runs me about $17.00 a sheet versus Wilsonart or other brand names which would be 60 to 70 a sheet.

Isn't that a vinyl and not a laminate on Dragons Lair?

It is, but here's the issue I have-

The vinyl laminated panels, like those, and what Atari used aren't available.

Some like to build cabinets from black melamine particle board. While this is the closest, in my opinion, to the original material, it doesn't look 'exactly' like the original stuff, and melamine chips pretty easily. Shouldn't be a problem once t-molding is applied, and in a HUO environment.

I can't find black melamine particleboard near me.

If I apply adhesive vinyl to a panel, it's NOWHERE near as durable as that original stuff. The original stuff wasn't just adhesive vinyl, but a pressure/heat applied laminate. It took decades to peel off in most cases. The sticky vinyl will shrink over time and just won't take the bumps and scrapes like the original stuff.

Laminate is tough as hell. Vertical grade matte black laminate applied to MDF/particle board/plywood looks VERY close to the original Atari type sheet material. If you use vertical grade, the panel can still be close enough to 3/4" that you don't need wider t-molding.

+1

Vertical grade laminate (available in black) is more forgiving and very tough once applied. And if you do accidentally leave a scuff mark, you can easily clean it with Simple Green, alcohol, etc.

Also, if you get the self-adhesive laminate (which admittedly is a bit more expensive) it's easier to apply than vinyl.

The vinyl product I referenced is smooth - similar to the texture type on an Atari cabinet. Not sure if they sell the textured style found on DL.
