I found a 80's black knight for sale for $550. looks in nice shape and compleat but dose not work because it was hacked. Yes, wires jumped, twisted, cut, and all. Is it worth the time and aggervation? As well as the money?

Well I spoke to the guy. He claims he has some one comming over with $800 for it today. My ass he dose. Its on ebay for $550 and no bids with hours left on it. Just for that he can offer it for $200 and i wont but it, Thats just poor taste in my opinion. What moron pays $800 for a broken machine in need of a backglass?

It did sell for $550 with 10 minuets left in the auction. Im quite surprised.

Thats what im thinking. That much for a hack job? I paid $400 for a fully working firepower II pin that was home owned its whole life. Opinions on what it should be worth? $300?

Depends on condition and how hacked it is. $300 is starting to sound more reasonable.

The one on e-bay in Clifton? It doesn't look too badly hacked, just the GI connectors into the power supply, which is normal for just about every system 7 out there. The driver board is going to need work, typical fried resistors in the lamp matrix. Playfield is fair, not perfect but I've seen a lot worse. Backglass would need to be replaced, flaked all to hell and back.

I'd try to get it down to $400 or so, but nothing about it scares me too much.

Yes that would be it. Im thinking. i saw it and was like 'hmmmm" I live close by it so getting it would not be too bad.

yeah definitely worth it. Being hacked is no big deal. That's just a matter of taking the time to diagnose the problems and fixing them. There is even a good chance that the hacking has nothing to do with the problem and is just an 'ugly fix' Electricity doesn't care what the wiring looks like as long as it all gets to the right places.

When buying a pinball machine you should be much more concerned about overall condition of the artwork. That's the part that is usually too expensive to fix if the game is blown out.

The great thing about that vintage of game is that the pcbs are always cost effective to fix (unless there is battery acid damage on the mpu).

I have seen people bent out of shape before just because the GI connectors are gone and someone has soldered lamp cord to the pcbs. The truth is, that's actually a better connection than the 'pretty' factory molex connector.

Agree on all counts.

FWIW: I'll always say buy it for the right price. I didn't say don't get it. I said don't pay too much. More specifically I said I probably wouldn't pay $550 but as usual that's totally dependent on condition.

Hacked

Depending on what has been hacked. I would say it was worth it if the playfield and back glass are niceish. I sold a BK this year for $500 non working with a decent playfield and back glass with acid damage. I could have sold 5 of them just like it for that price if I had them. The demand is still there for that title.

I just looked it up on ebay. That playfield is actually pretty nice. The "hacked" wires would be an easy fix. Doesnt look to bad.

The backglass is the kicker though. Back when I had mine, mayfair wanted $300 for a reproduction. Guess it depends on if you like the game and plan on keeping it.

to me it's just poor tase to lie and say some one is giving you more than its worth because you're unhappy with my offer. Just tell the truth and say i low balled your ass and you refuse to take it and give me the damn price you want! and ill work with you. to me thats pretty simple. a "No" never hurts anyone too bad.

A solid BK is worth it at this price. The hacks you refer to are common on sys7 games. This on-board connector could not handle the current/heat so the easy fix was to solder them to the board. I have bought several sys7 games that had this hack. No big deal.
