Billy Mitchell pulls out early

What's the story behind "f**k you billy mitchell f**k you"?

It's the reason Steve Sanders dislikes the movie" Chasing Ghosts." To make a long story short, it's what Steve said to billy after being bested by billy back in the day. The actual story is much longer then in the movie. Steve was assured by the producers the story wouldn't be cut just to get the juicy bit in there. Then they cut it down to pretty much just the juicy bit.

Wait, Billy is famous for playing games?? I thought it was for his ruthlessly refusing to give up the mullet!

billy is a great player but he only has a couple titles he was known for.

More like five. I believe he held records on Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, and Burgertime simultaneously back in the early '80s (and he was known to be a world class Centipede player as well but I don't think he ever held that record). He has since lost all of those records except Pac-Man, but those were all high profile, popular titles and he held those records at a time when the whole damned country was dropping billions of dollars worth of quarters each year playing arcade games.

The problem with Bill's ranking today is that gamers like Donald Hayes and John McAllister have come along and they each dominate and hold records on dozens of titles, many of them first tier games that lots of people play. Then again, Donald and John don't have spouses and kids to contend with. If Bill had the free time and the motivation I've no doubt that he could be just as competitive today.

Billy is full on rocker, not part-time mullet. To qualify as a mullet it needs to be short in the front.

As far as Billy being "famous" It has to do more with the games he is famous for. In the 80's everyone had played pacman, and almost everybody knew who Donkey Kong was. So I might be the best at "solar fox" at my local arcade, but who would care? Solar Fox wasn't a game the public knew and cared about. His fame is more like the fame you would have by being the best friend of a celebrity. Popularity by proxy.

Donald either got married or is about to. I told him to get his records in now. :)

Also in terms of all around gamers, from playing in a good number of tourneys over the last few years....the scariest players to me to see registered are Donald Hayes, john mcallister, Ben falls and Jason cram. All are capable of playing 1hour+ type games as well as fast reflex games, each are great at creating and learning very quickly and all are competitive and come well prepared to tournaments. They are all of elite natural skill as well which is scary.

Billy is pulling out for family matters?

You mean he has to push his family's hot sauce in front of the competitor's on the store shelf. Tough deal. :D

gozer - you gotta make a Google Sketch Up 3D Billy Mitchell !!

Then he could "VIRTUALLY" be anywhere.....

-You could even add some of the other King of Kong'rs!

That would be a classic!

Go Go Gozer !!!!!!!!!!!

WTF? I downloaded this and it didn't show up!!!

(I'm here all week, folks)

I would have liked to meet him and it sucks that he was advertised to be here. No big deal in the end though since family comes first. There are still plenty of Pin and Vid speakers that I'm looking forward to. - Barry

Interesting thread. We have a little bit of everything, except for the SW chair.
Now having that thing there would make the show for sure! Who needs Billy Mitchell when you can have the SW chair there? :D

why are the super friends canceling on this event? HMMM Walter is next!

But hey i will still be there!

Gotta say I love the poster and video on the site !!! So professionally done !!

Gotta say I always wanted to go to CAX but it looks like airfare to Seattle is a lot cheaper than to SF....let's see if I can round up some guys from Europe to come over in 2012....

Would be great to finally meet some of you guys !

That would be the year to do it. 2012 will be our last year at the Seattle Center, which in my opinion is the absolute best place in the Pacific Northwest to have the show. After next year's show local radio station KEXP will be moving into the Northwest Rooms and they will no longer be available to rent. The search is already in progress for a new venue for 2013. We might end up down near Sea-Tac airport in one of the many hotels there, which would be convenient for anyone flying in for the show.

I thought I read about him loosing Pac-man. While he had a perfect game, someone else did a perfect game in less time. Maybe that doesn't count officially, but it does in my book. Billy needs a haircut.
