I have a Big Buck Hunter that upon power up, the screen shows "no signal". What can I do to resolve this?

Thanks,

David

Big Buck Hunter

Thanks, I will check the front power switch. If I do need a power supply, where can I find one?

It's a standard ATX power supply - At least 270 watts or greater.

Not sure on the exact size, so it might require a smaller size one to physically fit in the computer case. Maybe someone can chime in on the BBH Pro's required size.

The PC's motherboard "should" be set to auto power on when power is applied. I have had a couple games with PCs in them that the monitor showed "No Signal." The power supplies were fried. I guess that is what happens when you stick a heat box (PC) inside another heat box (arcade cabinet).
The fan could've seized also and burnt out the power supply.

Power Supply Tester

Just in case pushing the power button on the computer behind the coin door doesn't work, and then checking the connections between the power switch and the CPU on the backplane turns up with nothing....

I just finished repairing a BBH. The CPU was dead, and so was the power supply. I inspected the CPU, but I couldn't find any obvious smoking guns (blown chips, blown capacitors, smoked components), so I had to go the exchange route. I couldn't find a compatible board.

You can do a quick check of the PS by jumpering the main (large) connector by inserting a jumper between the green and black pins in the center. If the power supply powers up, you may have a bad CPU board. The only way to tell the difference is to use a PC power supply tester, which tests the power supply under load.

If your CPU is dead, you'll need to contact Betson for a replacement. It's around $400, exchange.

Betson can be reached at [email protected] (George Angermeyer is one of their tech guys, and is really great to work with) or by phone at 1-800-524-2343.

The main computer seems to be coming on, the lights on the front of it are on and I can hear it running. The board on the right side of the cabinet is lit up with red LEDs. I noticed that on the front of the computer that the CD rom door will not open up when the button is pressed, could that be an issue as well?

Thanks,

David

Ahhh Common problems with Microtel PC's are:

Dead Bios Battery, which results in BIOS resetting and the UPON LOSS OF POWER setting to go to STAY OFF

Bad video cards. These almost are always the issue.

Power supply issues.

Heatsink compound dried up and it burned out the processor.

Just a note about the jumper. Running the jumper will power on the power supply, but it will NOT power up the mb. The MB has a circuit that constantly monitors a stable voltage that is ALWAYS applied to the MB, this is how the cpu is able to power up.

I can almost tell you that you do NOT have ap/s issue, probably a video card or MB issue.

Can I tell if the motherboard is good or bad by the status of the LEDs on the board? Also, where can I get another video card?

Thanks,

David

E-Bay is the best resource for them. I have bought a few for the Fast & Furious' I have, NASCARs, Blazing Angels and a couple other games. $500 for a new card from manufacturer for NASCAR or $50 for one on the bay. Which would you choose?

I might be totally wrong here but I'm pretty sure that dedicated 27" BBHPro's didnt use a video card but used the onboard video.

If jumpering the pins on the power supply connector turns the supply on then I'd agree with everyone else here, you've got a bad mobo. You could also have a bad CPU IC which wouldnt be all that rare considering the games age.

You have two choices here.

#1. Fix the crap MicroTel now and deal with this same problem in a year or two.

OR

#2. REPLACE that crap Microtel with a Dell OptiPlex740 (as seen in this link) http://tinyurl.com/8tcsoyj. Restore the software with the latest version (1.25 available form any coin-op distributor or you can download it from Raw Thrills). The 740 isnt bullet proof but its a much better machine then ANY MicroTel out there.

But, if you really want to keep the MicroTel this board is compatible with BBH World so it "should" work with BBH Pro. http://tinyurl.com/987xjnn I had to install a Zotak 8400GS in the computer but everything else worked fine. YMMV with BBHP though.

DONT buy an FX CPU with the above board though. The software restore process gets stuck because of the extra CPU cores. Anything pre FX should work.

Push the power on switch on the front of the computer if this is a "Pro" version.

@KenLayton is a saint! I'm so glad I found this post of his. For me, his advice was the solution for my old BBH Pro cabinet. After I moved it to a new house and tried to set it up, the monitor showed "No signal, check signal cable" upon power up. The PC was definitely NOT on/running. So after finagling with power cables in the backbox, plugging the PC directly into an outlet, no dice with the back side power switch of the PC. I thought I needed a new PC power supply.

But no, all I needed to do was power up the cabinet and hit the FRONT power button on the PC as Ken mentioned. Even though this may not be a solution for all facing the error above, I wanted to reply so that others who are searching for a solution find what worked for me. Again, I have the older BBH "PRO" cabinet / PC. THANK YOU, KEN!!!
