Poor Sinistar, seems to have a bit of a speech impediment, instead of the 'Beware I Live' sound the 'L' is missing - anyone any idea what is wrong/how to fix?

Not a major issue but somehow it makes me feel sorry for him, can see how he ended up so bitter...

Try this 1st:
Pull the speech cable off the connector on the soundboard and re-seat it - do the same for the cable on soundboard to the MPU board as well.

Try this 2nd:

The speech board is the smaller board attached to the sound board by a short ribbon cable.

It has its own volume pot and 4 eproms on it.

Pull the eproms out (do 1 at a time) and note their location and orientation.

Clean the legs of the eprom with a soft ruby pencil eraser - straighten any bent pins.

Re-insert eprom into the socket and repeat for the remaining 3 erpoms.

Sometimes it can be as simple as poor contact.

If neither of these fix it, my guess would be that you might have a corrupt speech eprom.

Make sure that your voltages are correct on the power supply as well.

Maybe it wants to hear some Burl Ives? ;)

Agreed on the EPROM direction... my bet is one either needs to be cleaned, needs to be reburned, or the socket it plugs into needs replacing.

LOL.

Sorry, I know it's not funny but it's funny!

OK, i hope you will forgive my ignorance on this but i am new when it comes to arcade machines...

I have performed the diagnostics test and when cycling through the sounds i do not get 'sound line 3' or 'sound line 6' on the screen, and therefore no sounds, the other sounds look and play fine. I have found what i think is the sound board and identified some chips, but the manual says if sound 3 is missing that i need to check '2p4/10p3 pin 5' - none of my chips are marked like that - anyone got any help for me?

cheers!

forget my last post - i have located the relevant chips and have taken them off one by one and cleaned then, i have taken off the cable and reseated it, still no improvement. i have realised i am missing a number of sounds - 'run coward' 'i hunger' 'i hunger coward' 'run run run'.

so, any ides? If i am looking at corrupt chips anyone any idea where i could get replacements - i am in the UK but happy to source in the US...

Sounds like corrupt ROMs on your Speech Board. I would send the sound board and speech board to Yellowdog for repair if he has time to fix it.

I checked the voltages on the power supply today and got the following:
11.9
-5.03
5.18

which, in my limited experience, seem close?

The fact that i am getting all of the game sounds - shooting etc, and some of the samples - as far as i can tell only run, i , the 'l' from 'live' and coward aren't working, whereas hunger, i am sinister, the roar are - seems to me like i may have a corrupted or non-working rom. Does this make sense?

As I am in the UK does anyone know of anywhere where i could get replacement rome burned and sent out? I have sent a msg to yellow dog but as yet haven't received a reply but would rather not send the boards to the other side of the world!!

Recapping the reply to chubsta, if there is somebody local who can verify his ROMs (you just need a burner that can read 2532s IIRC and the MAME Sinistar ROMs). That would take that out of the equation. Additionally, recrimping the ribbon cable between sound card and the speech card can often help.

After that, it is a matter of using a logic probe to make sure none of the addressing lines on the speech board are messed up.

It is a pretty simple circuit. The CPU on the sound card reads the data from the speech ROM chips, shoves it down the speech data line. That is converted to an analog signal that is amplified by the two op-amps and mixed with the sound effects in the third one. If you are getting some speech effects then it is probably not the D/A or op-amps. That leaves the ROMs or an issue with one (or more) of the data lines.

What... are there four speech ROMs? If they are 2532 EPROMs then I can burn you a set for the cost of shipping. I have a bunch of those here so it's no big deal. Just let me know(and make sure they are indeed 2532s).

This has nothing to do with helping with this topic, but I'm a big Burl Ives fan. My pigs also REALLY like Burl Ives.

Er, I'm also a Sinistar fan.

OK, i have kind of reached a dead end with this because i am pretty lacking in technical skills/equipment...

I therefore think the best bet would be to buy a replacement fully working sound and speech board, does anyone know any reputable online sellers that would be able to supply one of these? I am in the UK so i know many sellers don't really like sending outside the US but surely this is a worthy cause!!

Have just tried to msg again but it still doesn't show up in my 'sent' folder - can't work out what is wrong... Yellowdog - can you confirm please if you have received a msg from me?
