Okay before i get ripped on here, i did search and did not find a good answer. So at least i tried.
Question: How do i remove Tron sideart without scratching the paint?
I'm getting all new art but don't want to repaint since the paint is not at all close to being bad. The only problem is the wearing of the art.

So that means no sanding or chemical stripper. The other method that i know would be heat gun. Would that heat and peel the paint at all?

Thanks.

Your post implies that you are just going to apply some repro side art. Since you don't plan on repainting the cabinet, have you considered just leaving the old art on and placing the new art directly over the old art? That would have the advantage of placing it on exactly the right location on the cabinet. And I doubt it would be noticeable at all, it's not like the side art it thick enough to matter. Just a thought...

I just did this exact thing a few days ago!

I first tried that orange safe strip, nothing... Then Acetone, while it did work it was a little messy and took a lot of Acetone.

My last try was a paint stripper that I got from Home Depot. I dont recall the name but the can of stripper comes with a spray bottle. It said that it would work in around 15 minutes on paint but started to work within 5 minutes on the side art. I was able to gently push the stuff off of the cabinet with a metal scrapper. Came right off!

Found it... http://tinyurl.com/365uuts FYI, this stuff has some STRONG fumes. Dont use it indoors. Its probably not so good on skin either. My hands are kinda hardened to chemicals so I wouldnt know. :)

The surface under the stripper was left intact and unharmed. Clean as all get out too!

Oh, I had the machine on its side so that the stuff could sit on the artwork.

I would suggest to use a hair dryer or heat gun to take off the original side art. They make plastic knife blades and use that or your fingernail to get it started. It will take awhile but depended on the adhesive it should come off the a hairdryer. If the cab paint wasn't cured and dried properly it might peal paint off of cab. So be careful and take your time is should come off. They make this adhesive remover if there is any left over residue to put on to get that off. And use a plastic blade for that. To scrap of the adhesive residue. It shouldn't scratch paint. This what I used to take the side art off of my Kung Fu master. Good kuch and hope this help.

FWIW, I tried this on the Tron that I'm restoring. The artwork would come off in 1-2" pieces. I thought to myself that it would take hours to clean all that artwork off then I'd still have to deal with the adhesive when I was done.

The stripper worked perfectly for me. As far as the paint not being cured, its had almost 30 years to continue to cure (albeit under side art) so I'm sure the OP's cab will be fine.

I've used stripper before and since i am have no patience whatsoever, i fear i would fuck it up to easily.

I was thinking of this and was wondering if it would be noticeable...
Has anyone ever done this and are there pictures?

I'm tellin ya, the stripper is way easy. Do it and you will be happy with the results. Just watch where your smearing the stuff that your wiping off of the game.

If the artwork on the game has any tears, missing parts or any other defects other then color fade they will show through to the new artwork. If you got the stuff from Darin is VERY sensitive to whats underneath it. The high gloss finish on the new artwork will show every defect in the surface below it.

Not trying to make you do something you dont want to, just trying to help.

Matt

I used a paint stripper on my tron to remove the artwork. Finished in 20 minutes and it did no damage to the vinyl underneath it. You leave it on for 5 minutes and strart scraping it just falls right off. Then apply again to remove all the adhesive

dont use the heat gun

+1. The heat gun made more work of taking off the art then there needed to be. If I was lucky I'd get a big 3 or 4 inch long piece pulled off but then there might be adhesive left on the cab so I'd have to use some sort of remover. Blah...

Maybe i will use the stripper... I am getting the artwork from pheniox arcade, don't know his name if that his who you are referring to.

Thanks guys for all the replies!

Darin is Phoenix arcade.
I know of no pheniox arcade.:D
If the cab is indeed laminate the the stripper shouldn't hurt the finish.
You could test it in an area not too visible to be sure.

Heat gun is the best if you don't like the stripper mess - just hack away at it till yer done....
...
Goof Off, or Paint reducer (the automotive kind) and a pile of teck wipes (you know the blue paper towels sold at Home Depot/Lowes)... will remove all the residual glue left over from the heat gun method.

Repainting isn't such a bad idea after all - is it!!!

My major like is the satisfaction of looking at the result after all the work and being able to say - "I DID THAT...". Looks really great...

Do what you have to - to get the results you want...
