I have those cheap chip pullers that come in a computer repair kit, but they don't usually feel very stable. I tried a flat screwdriver in the past but was always worried that I'd wreck whatever was underneath.

So, are there any preferred ways to pull chips?

I use a flat screwdriver. Those chip pullers were never anything but trouble for me.

I use just the tweezer type chip puller on any .3" chip. On any .6" 28 pin and up I will usually pop the ends up a little with a screwdriver first before using the puller.
