Best way to lay machine on it's side without removing/damaging monitor?

I want to inspect the bottom of, and put casters on my Robotron machine, so I need to put the machine on it's side to do that.

What is the best way to do that such that I don't cause damage to the monitor? Side? Front? Back?

You should also check everything in the cabinet, not just the monitor, to make sure they are all bolted/screwed down and secure. The transformer assembly at the bottom of the cabinet, the boards themselves, etc can all shift around if you lay a cabinet down and you don't want one thing falling into another. For some reason I've come across a number of power bricks that weren't attached to the bottoms of the cabs, and those can do some damage if they happen to flop over onto a pcb.

Of course, you can just remove the monitor too, and give yourself both one thing less to worry about and 40 pounds less to lift.

When I lay my games down on their side, I lay the upper part on a phone book, so that when I lift it back up, I have a little room to get my hands under it. This makes it much easier to lift, than if the game was totally flat on the floor.

What's a "phone book"?
