I got this DK Jr particle cab. As you can see its got some brown paint on it. Unlike the ply cabs these particle cabs do not have the slick enamel-type finish and I don't want to get too agressive removing the brown or I might end up taking off the original paint too. Otherwise this cab is really solid and doesn't need paint.

Humm thats a good ques.. I can offer this.. Whatever you try, i would test it on the bottom black base first.IF YOU CAN GET THE BROWN OFF WITHOUT TAKING OFF THE BLACK, ID THINK IT BE SAFE FOR THE ORANGE. Is the brown paint oil or latex? NICE FIND!!!!!

I suspect it's latex but I'm not exactly sure how to tell. I've had minor success with grafitti remover, which cleaned off some of the areas where the paint wasn't as thick, but it doesn't seem to be doing much to the thicker areas.

How about Magic Eraser? I used it to remove paint on my cabinets. Worked well but it was spray paint and probably not as thick as you have. Just go light and take your time. If it's really thick could you try a razor blade to get it as close as possible and give the other stuff a chance to work at that point.

wasn't aware that the particle board cabs were painted unlike the plywood cabs. I have a few of these particle board cabs that will eventually be restored so the current finish is unimportant since they will be repainted. If you want me to try a few things like goof off, mineral spirits, or whatever to see if my paint comes off I can do so as I have numerous chemicals around the house.

That orange should cover just about anything. I got a nice match for that DK orange awhile ago at Home Depot.

Little sanding, little Kilz primer and some orange touch up and you should be fine.

Yeah, that would be awesome. I'd love to keep from destroying the original finish if at all possible. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if the rest of the cab was not in such good shape.

As far as the differences in finish, it is definately different on my two cabs. I've got a red DK, ply cab, made in japan, and the finish is super-slick (somebody was saying they do this type of painting on boats). On the DK Jr. particle cab, made in USA, the finish is much more textured and paint-like. They are very different. I seriously doubt any sort of paint remover would do damage to the ply cab. I'm not so sure on the particle cab. I just wish the ply cabs weren't so prone to chipping.

I'll try the magic eraser too!

If I have to do any painting on this sucker I may turn it into a D2K but at this point I want to take it back to a Jr.

FYI,

I worked on this for an hour today and I got a little over half of the brown paint off the main part of the cab today. The big brown blob is gone and I'm working on the other big brown spot.

I used the Mostenbochers Lift Off Graffitti Remover and a magic eraser. It's taking a lot of elbow grease but it's working. It doesn't seem to be taking off any of the original finish. I've been wiping everything down with a wet paper towel when I'm done and drying so that the chemicals don't sit on there forever.

I got the paint off using mostly Graffiti Lift Off and paper towels. I used a Magic Eraser too but, odly enough, the paper towels did a better job. It took a couple hours over the course of a few days but it all came off (I didn't do the base but I'll probably sand and repaint the base).

Now for the next problem that may force me to repaint this cab.

I started to remove the sideart and discovered that there is a noticable difference in color where the sideart was. I suspect that sideart has been on the cab since 1986.

The below picture is after I've scrubbed the corner with Graffiti Lift Off, a Magic Eraser, and Goo Gone, none of which seemed to do much. I can't tell whether it's a product of fading, of the uncovered parts getting dirty, or of the covered part being affected by the sideart (if you look really close you can see how the sideart image is almost burned onto the paint, sort of like screen burn on paint.)

Any suggestions on how to deal with something like this?

That looks like sun fading. I had a picture on a wooden wall for years then we took it down and behind the picture was lighter than the rest of the wall. Our guess was from the sun coming through the front of the house and hitting that wall.

You should just paint it and be done with it. There is a really good orange paint code in a MB restore.

Mine had the same fade issue... I simply applied the new sticker over the old area and it looks tits. Sure makes it easy to determine "placement" as well.

I would definately do this if I was going to keep it a DK3. Right now it's going back to a DK Jr (different shape sideart).
