Best version of Street Fighter II, and price check?

I know a few of you guys are really in to the Capcom fighting games. I am too, but don't have the variety of experience that some of you do.

That being said, what is generally considered the best version of Street Fighter II?

I just picked up a cab with Super Street Fighter II X in it, which is the Japanese version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. I've read that this version seems to be the best, but just figure I would ask.

Also, I've read the US version seems to be one of the more rare versions, but since I have the Japanese, how does it compare? What would be a price range for each version of the B board?

Best for the average gamer: Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting $40-50

Best for the expert gamer: Super Street Fighter II Turbo $100-120 for just the B board. $150-180 complete.

Though my personal favorite is Street Fighter II: The World Warrior for nostalgic reasons even though I know it's the slowest and most flawed.

im no expert on SF and all the diffrent versions but if i wanted to put a street fighter II in my collection it would have to be one of the "new challengers" editions that includes all the characters

If we are talking street fighter and its clones, I would vote for Vampire Saviour. If we are talking great playing Street Fighter Alpha III I think. If you want the ULTIMATE SF experience, blow the coin for that uber rare SF anniversary edition that has every SF character in it. All are available on CPS-II. But hey, what do I know. I'm not even a true fan of the series.

Does the price drop/change much for the Japanese version?

From what I know, the Japanese version is a bit easier in 1 player mode. Compared to the USA version, which pretty much hands you your ass if your an average gamer! These are best for good 2 player battles.

Go ask about this on Neo Geo forums and you'll get a better answer regarding price. Those guys know all about CPS2 stuff.

No offense to the Neo Geo forums, but some of us here are just as hardcore about this stuff (they also tend to overvalue their stuff).

First reply pretty much nailed it:

CPS1 = Hyper Fighting
CPS2 = Super SF2 Turbo (or Super SF2 X).

ST is definitely most desired by the hardcore players. Hyper Fighting is desirable to everyone. Championship Edition is desirable to people not in the know but are nostalgic for SF2 (since Championship Edition had more of a cultural impact/exposure than WW and HF).

Super Turbo, both Japanese and American boards are worth about the same. Aside from AI difference there is like, one glitch with Zangief that only the super duper hardcore will give a crap about. Also, there is no free play setting on the Green board (really annoying when I owned my green board).

ST I'd say between 100-180 also. It's desirable, but I never see it go for over 200. If I had disposable cash right now I'd offer you somewhere in the middle of that.

A board is insignificant when it comes to this particular game imo. This is one of those cps2's where the value is really in the B board only. Unlike, say, an Alpha 1 board where the A may make the deal more worth the asking price.

World Warrior or Turbo work for me. I don't have a SFII right now so I would probably take any I could get, unless it was in a Z back cabinet.

Thanks for all the responses. I figured I could ask at the Neo Geo forum, or register at one of the CPS2 or shoryuken, but I knew some guys here are just as knowledgeable.

I got $260 for my blue extra B Super Turbo on ebay a little while ago =)

Thanks. This makes me happy, so I know I got a good deal... The cabinet it came in is pretty crappy, but with a little work will be good.

And it came with a working 19" WG K7000, so combine that with the working board, I'd say I'm good.

Crappy forum rules + Tight knit elitists = Neo-Geo.com. I gave up just trying to get a thread posted in the technical help section. Thankfully, I got help from a couple few KLOVers (some who are on NG.com as well but before they implemented their ridiculous rules) especially RJ (Channelmanic).

So you're right, there are plenty of guys in KLOV that know their JAMMA stuff and are probably a lot nicer. I'm not a JAMMA mastermind, but I grew up playing JAMMA games and own a few now, so I feel I know enough to help the next guy.

I used to like Street Fighter II: Turbo the best, but a while back I got the same one you've got, the Japanese version of Super Street Fighter II: Turbo. In my opinion, it's the best because it doesn't take away anything cool from the earlier games, has all the same characters, plus more characters and moves. So it's like the super deluxe version of the game. Akuma's hidden in it, too. I think he's called Gouki or something in the Japanese version, though, but same thing. It's a fairly bad-ass game, I really like it.

I like Super Street fighter 2: The new challengers as it was what i played for most of my childhood on the snes

That's the same one I played on SNES.

After that one, sadly, Street Fighter fell off my radar until Alpha 3 MAX on the PSP, and then IV. During the gap between them, I still played Street Fighter II though, so it wasn't totally off the grid.

Super turbo hands down. If you want alpha then Alpha 2. If you want 3, then Third Strike

And for the hardcore old school.. Champion Edition

I'm a member on NG.com also and have a pretty good collection of CPS2 stuff. There is a lot of drama over there but some of the most knowledgable people about cps2 and 3 are members there. This includes NG.com member Mainman who has a complete set of CPS2 games including the rare CPS2 version of MM: power battles (97% were on CPS1) and all Japanese only games (Mahjong etc.) He also developed the process to phoenix a Black single-board CPS2 pcb. He phoenixed my Black MVC for me because I gave him some dead boards to experiment with. Its costly to phoenix a black board so its for collectors only.

I have never seen a Street Fighter 2 Turbo myself. Only Hyper Fighting.
I personally think that the Console naming or import naming got mixed in.

I think it jumps from WW -> CE -> HF -> SSF2 -> SSF2T

My personal price points are

WW - $40-50
CE - $50-75
HF - $50-75
SSF2 - (A+B) $80-100
SSF2T - $150-250 (maybe in the higher range) they come up for sale so rarely that the price is very high. This is for an original non-phoenix with a new battery)

People like CE and HF so I won't take a way from it.

ST is a must have for me and Anthony is correct. I have mine on the easist setting and it like totally combos me to death. Impossible stuff like standing flash kicks from Guile etc... What were they thinking? I took it off location cause there's no way to make money when it's that hard.
