Up til today I woulda said Berzerk (even without speech). Well, I played the Vectrex version of Armor Attack for the first time this morning (with the correct overlay) and loved it. Once I got used to the thrust, turn and fire controls, I really enjoyed playing it. The way the helicopter is graphically rendered is pure genius. The sounds and music are sweet and the overlay reminds me of the upright arcade machine. I played the full size version at CAX 2009 and thought I needed to buy one. Now I can get my fix in a much smaller package. What's your favorite Vectrex arcade port (or clone like Minestorm)?

Armor Attack is pretty awesome but my vote goes to Space War.

There are also some sweet homebrews of Lunar Lander and Gravitar out there.

Oh and Fury has just released Sundance and a really good Time Pilot clone but his "Pièce de résistance" for me is his upcoming recreation of Warrior. I can't wait!

Well, Protector (Defender) is a tour-de-force, but I was also amazed by Space Fury.

I placed an order for Vector Pilot (Time Pilot) and if the Youtube video floating around on that is indicative, it's going to be an amazing port. There's a VecHockey game that came out a few months ago that I picked up -- it's essentially Hat Trick.

Protector is to me the best Vectrex game by far. It's basically Vector Defender. It controls well too!

I need to go place an order for the Time Pilot clone!

Is there a forum or otherwise for following new homebrew Vectrex releases? I wouldn't have known about the Time Pilot unless I read about it in another thread on here.

Mine is Armor Attack, I got mine with overlay and it zoomed me back to my childhood. Really, really great port.

I like Cosmic Chasm on the Vectrex way more than I do the arcade game.

Scramble, Berserk, Armor Attack were all great versions. Really the vectrex had a lot of cool games, they did a lot right with that little system.

Star Castle and Solar Quest are both great on the Vectrex. I agree that Sundance is a lot of fun on Vectrex, never played the arcade version though.

Vector Pilot looks pretty amazing for a Vectrex game. This system really puts the 2600 and other systems of the time to shame.

Great topic!

Licensed original GCE remakes for Vectrex:

Armor Attack
Scramble
Berzerk
Rip-Off
Space Wars
Cosmic Chasm
Starhawk
Solar Quest
Pole Position
Star Castle

I think that's all of them. Cosmic Chasm actually preceded the arcade version. There are lots of homebrew remakes. You guys have mentioned many of them already. John Dondzila made several. I really have always liked his Missile Command clone, Patriots. He also did Wormhole, which is a really cool clone of Gyruss. I've done two, War of the Worlds and Sundance, and I have Warrior coming out next.

Sweet, I'd love to pick up a few of your homebrews, do you have any left, and if so, do you have a link? How about to John's? Did you have custom overlays made for each game or do you plan to?

Thanks guys, yeah Sundance and War of the Worlds are available. Warrior is currently sold out, technically "pre-sold out" because I haven't released it yet. I do have a waitlist though, so let me know if you want to be added. If it gets enough names I'll put in an order for more overlays and boxes. Warrior is my first game to include an overlay. I feel that Warrior actually needs an overlay to define the game play area. With Warrior I've created a single player campaign mode in addition to a clone of the original 2-player game.

For John's games:

I buy my circuit boards from John now. Great guy, easy transactions. He is the original Vectrex homebrewer, started way back in '96! (I didn't come around until '03)

And so I didn't even answer the original question. My favorite Vectrex port/remake/clone that actually isn't a port/remake/clone because the arcade version was based on the Vectrex game is...Cosmic Chasm. I still remember playing that one the most waaay back in '83. I still play it today. Great action game with adventure elements. How cool does it feel to blow up an entire planet? ;)

The others are all great too, with some fun 2-player games in there.
