Hey guys

I am going to be setting up a CP for my Joust that will be tailored for my JROK PCB. I think I have decided to use an old Joust CP I have in storage with the Arcadeoverlays Multi Williams overlay.

What are the best sticks to use? I normally work with metal CP's and am not sure what works with wood. I have used the cheap stuff in the past and it is OK but if there is a gold standard please let me know.

Thanks! Ryan

Gold standard is the Wico 4" shaft leaf joys. It's what Robotron was released with and you'll pay through the nose for em.

if you can get 'em, Robotron sticks (4" Wicos) seem to be the stick of choice. someone here was even selling yellow and blue 4" sticks to match a Joust theme.

however, i haven't switched out the sticks on my multi-Williams yet and the cheap Happ-style microswitch sticks play the games ok as well.

Blasphemer!! Microswitch sticks with Robotron are the absolute "suck". Of course many don't realize this until they try nice leafs. Even 3.5" Wicos are 100x better than microswitch sticks, though 4" Wicos are the bee's knees...

Watch Ebay... watch the FS forum here... ask in the WTB forum... no actual "source" for them. I may have a matching set of 3.5" Wicos...

I wonder where 4" ones become the magical must have.
Williams didn't even use 4" ones on a metal control panel, did they?
Seems like it would be good for Robotron, but difficult for other games. Where as 3.5" ones would be good for the other games and at worst OK for Robotron.

Of course they did (for Robotron)...which was a wooden panel...

I've had both in my Williams Multigame... I prefer the 4".

BTW: My metal Williams Multigame panel has lugs sticking out for the stick essentially giving it the depth of a wooden panel.

If yours didn't have the lugs then, you would prefer the 3.5" ones?

Thanks Frizz. Anybody know if the 4" Wico sticks have the same mounting holes as the ones Bob sells?

Thinking about going cheap now and maybe upgrading later.

For a straight metal panel... probably... cuz you're right... it would stick out too high. That said, there is a difference in the FEEL of the two sticks... the taller stick has move lateral "movement"... etc. But yeah, I'm guessing they'd be too tall on a straight metal panel without the lugs.

I have the 3.5" sticks with my metal CP and they work great...

nanoryan, you using a wood or metal panel? I may have some extra Wico sticks.

It is all about the lateral movement. How far the stick is above the panel is of little relevance (besides appearance)... it's not like you rest your arms on the panel when you're playing Robotron....

There was a very long and flaming discussion about the "correct" stick to use with a Williams multi-game. It basically split into two camps, neither of which apppear to talk to each other now.

<recap>
The arguments split along the lines of which game was going to be played more. The short stick camp (and yes that was a penis reference :eek:) claimed that the taller sticks made it difficult to hit the reverse button in Defender/Stargate. The long stick camp claimed that short sticks suck for Robotron and who plays Defender/Stargate anyway. It was on from there.
</recap>

Most of the other arguments made were irelevant, irreverent, irregular, immoral, impossible (anatomically) or immaterial.

The height would make Defender/Stargate very difficult to play... the 4" sticks with the lugs or wooden panel are aready pretty tall and hitting the reverse is a little bit of a stretch. I am guessing a 4" stick on straight metal panel (without lugs) would be a little too far of a stretch unless you have huge hands.

Absolutely. That's why I have no interest in making an all encompassing Multi-WMS panel. Defender/Stargate deserves it's own dedicated CP.

Hmm, maybe I should setup a switchable 1P pannel with a short joy on one side and a long joy on the other side. Definately need to get my Defender AND Robo fix. :)

There are no 'best sticks to use'.
Anything you use will suck for at least one of the games in the multi.

4" wicos are great for robotron, but try playing defender/stargate and see if you can reach 'reverse'... They're passable for Joust, but a little annoying.

It would be nice to take a 4" shaft and dremel in an e-clip slot 1/2" or more down the shaft...you could then adjust the size depending on what game you're going to play.

I'm sure this won't work though as the top of the shaft is wider... oh well.
