Anyone have an opinion on the best source for a repro cpo for Robotron? I had one made, looks great, but then I cleaned up an original control panel with the original overlay on it and noticed a BIG difference. Wow. The lines on the original are much finer and more crisp, obviously done by silk screen.

I have looked, but all the ones I could find looked more like the repro I already had using the artwork from joymonkey. I big difference I noticed was the "start play" on the right side of the cpo was in black type on the original, but white on ever other image I could find.

Damn those cigarette burns on the original! I am probably going to keep it, but would like a similar cpo on the other Robotron I am restoring. I'll include some pics, the difference is pretty obvious. Or I could be completely out to lunch and the thin-lined, black start version is the repro. Any feedback appreciated.

So sit tight and wait to see if Phoenix will do another run? I can live with that. I have another overlay that will do the trick in the meantime, but would LOVE one that is close to the original.

Does this mean I am part of the "anal Williams crowd" referred to in the thread? Is it a bad thing?!!!!!!!

Uh, that post that I linked was from 2005......

Have you seen the Arcadeshop one? It is screened. I will be ordering one soon for my project. I don't believe that it is that bad.

I have seen another supposedly original CP with the black "Start Play" text and I recall from another thread here that there were a couple of different original Williams overlays, so maybe that's the answer. That may also explain why the suffixes of the original and repro you posted here differ and why the blue and black lines on the front reach different heights on the "2084".

The UK CPO had the black "Start Play" text, but then the rest of the text was also in black and they are not the same size as the US ones, so it can't be just the UK version.

That said, I still prefer the white "Start Play" text and the thicker lines on the repros just bug me. I'd love to know if the current Arcadeshop repros still suffer from this problem.

It seems to be a common thread that Williams games had different versions of artwork. Both overlays have the "Constantino '82" signature on them, but that in itself doesn't mean it is authentic. Authenticity aside it does come down to what each person judges to be the best-looking. Heck, there are people that love the Willis versions. I'm not one of them, but wouldn't look down on someone that does. I guess it just sucks that the version I like isn't available in a repro, nor is it likely to be anytime soon.

For the record, I do like the UK version of Robotron, both the cabinet and the control panel design. Thanks for the input!

Ditto. I've already gone through the trouble of talking to a guy in the UK and getting him to measure his cabinet for me.

The stencils for that cab have been out there for a while, but it didn't seem like anyone was sure about how they would work on the US version... ... it turns out, they'd work pretty well. So when it comes time to restore my Robotron, it'll be getting the UK paint job.

i like the UK version myself...didn't know stencils were availalbe for that. Guess I'll have to look into it.

I picked up an empty cab a month ago. Just gearing up now to go and work on it.
